British Army 9th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment
from:Bellmore Road, Woodhouse, Sheffield
Corporal John William Marples of the 9th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment was awarded the Military Medal in 1919.
His Citation reads:
"Conspicuous gallantry during the advance on 29th October 1918, in the Piave Battle. His platoon was held up by an enemy machine gun. This N.C.O who was in charge of a Lewis Gun Team pushed his gun forward into action against the enemy post which enabled the remainder of the platoon to outflank and capture the post.
During the advance he set a splendid example to his men"
