235487 L/Cpl. Henry Oscar Hendry MM. British Army 1/7th Btn. London Regiment from:1 Aline Rd, West Ham, Essex (d.7th Oct 1916) Henry Hendry was my great grandmother's brother. In 1911, aged 20, he lived with his parents William and Elizabeth at 1 Aline Road, West Ham, Essex and worked as an accounts clerk. He enlisted with the 1st/7th City of London Battalion as a Private, at Sun Street (date unknown). On 7th of October 1916 his battalion, part of the 47th Division, attacked the Butte de Warlencourt, during the Battle of The Somme. Henry was reported 'Missing presumed dead' after the attack and his name is carved on the Thiepval Memorial.
