235256 Pte. Joseph Stanton British Army 1st Btn. East Yorkshire Regiment from:Sheffield (d.16th Sep 1916) Joseph Stanton was my great grandfather. He was killed in action 100 years ago today. He was 34 years old, lived in Sheffield and was a plasterer by trade; he was married with four children who included my grandfather who was six years old at the time. His battalion was transferred to the 64th Brigade 21st Division and attacked the enemy at The Battle of Flers-Courcelette on 15th of September 1916. The battle is notable for the first use of tanks in warfare by the British army. My grandfather bequeathed me his father's medal just before he died and I shall be taking it over to Flanders this coming Armistice Service day November 1916. I have his service records and a poignant note is recorded: Forfeits 5 days pay for Absence without leave 24/12/1915 (Christmas Eve) to 28/12/1915 I would like to think he did enjoy his last Christmas with his family back home in Sheffield.
