234036 Pte. Bertie Pitts British Army 20th Field Ambulance Royal Army Medical Corps from:Cwm, Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire Bertie Pitts was my grandfather. He arrived in France with the 20th Field Ambulance on 21st August 1914 and survived the war. He arrived in time for the retreat from Mons, was in Ypres several times and I believe on the Somme. They were on summer camp with the Territorials in Aberystwyth when war broke out and were immediately mobilised. They weren't even allowed to go home to say goodbye to their families apparently. He served in the 20th Field Ambulance with his brother-in-law, Jack Barnfield, and his best friend from childhood Bert Button. He died in 1958 of cancer 2 years before I was born.
