224122 Pte. Joseph Carl British Army 1st Btn. King's Own Scottish Borderers from:Salford, Manchester, Lancashire, UK (d.26th April 1915) We do not know a lot about Joseph Carl. He was born about 1893 and married Ellen in 1911 and they had a son, John. He joined the KOSB at the very start of the war, feeling it was his duty to do so. After being shipped from Avonmouth, the 1st Battalion arrived in the harbour of the Greek island of Lemnos on the 24th April, where they trained to tranship into smaller vessels. The 25th April saw them off the coast of Gallipoli where they disembarked onto 'Y' beach. Joseph Carl was killed in action on the 26th. His name is on the Helles Memorial.
