Lionel Hobbs signed up in 1900 and played the flute in the band having studied at Kneller Hall Twickenham music school after returning from Canada to join the army aged just 14. He served in India for 7 years before being pulled back for WWI. He went to France and was captured on day 2 of the fighting at Mons. Then spent the rest of the war in various prison camps in Germany and Holland.
His total military total service was 19 years and 23 days.
