221009 Gnr. Alfred Coley British Army 2nd Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery from:67 Church Street, Earl Shilton, Leicestershire Alfred Coley was my maternal great grandfather. He departed for France on 8 October 1916, aged 36,and survived the war and had a fifth child, my grandmother. Family stories recount that he was gassed, although no details of when or where. His son-in-law, my grandfather, saw action in WWII with the invasion of Sicily and in early waves of assault infantry on D-Day at Sword Beach, Lion-sur-Mer, through Caen, Falaise, Nijmegen, Belsen to Luneberg.
