220393 Pte. William Edwards Australian Imperial Force D. Coy 39th Btn. from:Ballarat, Victoria (d.13th July 1917) Will Edwards, D Company, 39th Battalion (1893-1917) was a tailor in Ballarat, Victoria, prior to enlistment. He was killed in action with others when returning from fatigues when a shell exploded in the trench. Wounded and died on the way to the dressing station. From accounts of witnesses in Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing Enquiry Files (held in Aust War Museum archives) 'not really fit for the front... volunteered from the cook-house in England' 'little dark chap, abt 5'3 or 4' It is not known where he was buried but various reports state 'somewhere near Neuve Eglise'. 'All our men who could possibly be taken back were buried at Charing Cross, near Ploegstreet' 'he was buried in the Erquingham Cemetery' A photograph of him has been added to the Australian War Museum site.
