218039 2nd Lt. William Carter "WC" Preston British Army 8th Btn. Border Regiment from:Fold Farm, Far Sawrey, Lancashire (d.10th Apr 1918) William Carter Preston attended the old grammar school, Hawkshead Studies and became an Architect. In 1914 he joined the 8th Battalion, Border Regiment as a Private and was in all the battles until he was killed in action on 10th April 1918. William was wounded twice, and died as a result of a direct hit by a German artillery shell on his position at Laclytte, Reninghurst. At the time of his death, aged 24, he held the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. We have no grave to mark his passing he is remembered by his family to this day for the sacrifice he made so that we are and will remain free, in the land we love.
