Pte. Michael Manning

Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) 6th (Perthshire) Battalion

from:Auchterarder, Perthshire

(d.13th Aug 1915 )

My 2nd great grandfather Cornelius Manning and his son, Michael Manning, both went off to war in 1914. Father and son both served in France, Cornelius for two years, Michael for one serving with the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) 6th (Perthshire) Battalion (Territorial) - he was killed in Flanders dying of his wounds and subsequently buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery, France.

Cornelius survived and was discharged in 1919, later dying in 1925 at around the age of fifty. He was survived by his wife Annie and his five daughters, including Annie Hutchison, my great grandmother.

Additional Information:

As well as the daughters you mention,Cornelius had two more sons, one of them being my father. We have been hoping to trace some of the Hutchison branch of the family for years! I actually have two medals of Michael's and his red hackle, which you might like to see.I have no photos but a cousin in Auchterarder has one of Cornelius which I hadn't seen until last year. However, although military records seem to exist for Cornelius, none of us had any knowledge of his overseas service. He was definitely in camp around Bridge of Earn when the news of Michael's death reached the family in Auchterarder and we thought that was as far as he ever got. We would be really interested in hearing from you.
