213518 Dvr. Ernest Morris "Bill" Hughes MM. Australian Imperial Forces 9th Australian Machine Gun Coy from:Mossman, Sydney, New South Wales The eldest son of Australian Prime Minister William Morris "Billy" Hughes, Ernest Morris "Bill" Hughes enlisted in the AIF in 1916 at age 18 years and 4 months. He deployed to the Western Front with the 9th Australian Machine Gun Company and was awarded the Military Medal for action during the Battle of Messines. His citation read in part: "He brought up vital supplies of Ammunition through enemy barrages and gas shells, allowing his company to continue their Vickers machine gun barrage at the critical moment in the battle".
