The final phase of the offensive at Passchendaele Ridge began on the 9th October 1917. This was part of the final phase of the Third Battle of Ypres.
On the 26th Oct 1917 the 2/4th, 2/5th, 4/5th Loyal North Lancashires as part of the 170 Brigade of the 57th Division went forward through the mud in front of the German machine guns. There were 935 casualties and among them was 19 year old Lance Corporal Albert Gardner, Great Uncle to my husband.
