209258 Pte William John Key Bell British Army 2nd batt Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders from:Wath Head, Wigton (d.28th August 1916) My Great Uncle William Bell was a policeman in Carlisle. He enlisted in Kendal. His batalion the 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders were involved in one of the many attempts to capture High Wood during July/August 1916, all ending in failure. He was killed on the 28th August 1916 (but could have been anywere between 25th/29th) I think. His brother George Arthur was also a policeman in the Liverpool City Police at that time, on hearing the news that his brother was killed on the Somme he wanted to enlist. His superiors told him, Bell! you are not enlisting your job is here keeping law and order. Nothing more was said. William J K Bell has no known grave.
