208002 Cpl. Albert Edward Tinsley MM.British Army 12th Battalion Manchester Regiment from:Alderley Edge I remember my great uncle Ted when I was a child, but it was not until his daughter Alice died in the 1980s that I realised what he must have gone through during the Great War. On clearing the house I came across some letters and documents which detail some of his movements from 1914 to 1919.
Ted enlisted at the age of twenty in the 12th Battalion Manchester Regiment at Ashton Under Lyne and soon embarked for France. Somehow he managed to come through it all and I have his gallantry citation awarded 26th August 1918 for actions at Martinpuich and High Wood where he was awarded the Military Medal. Shortly after he was captured by the Germans and I have the letter from his commanding officer to his wife stating that he was missing from 9th September. I also have his dog tag and demob certificates. I remember him quite well as he was a bit of a character in the village where I grew up, and as children we never knew what he and his pals had gone through.
