Pte. Joseph Reed
British Army 2nd Btn. Northumberland Fusiliers

Joseph was the second son of Edward and Alice Reed, of 133, Northbourne St., Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne, twin brother of Mary. I believe Joseph may have been a regular soldier, he served in the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fussiliers and was killed in action on 3rd May 1915. The eldest brother, Edward survived the war, but the youngest, Thomas was also killed
in action at the Battle of Messines on the 7th of June 1917 whilst serving with the 11th Btn. Northumberland Fusiliers. Both Thomas and Joseph died aged 25 and their sister Mary never forgot them and referred to them always as "our Joe and our Tom". Thomas is listed on the Menin Gates Memorial and Joseph is buried in Bedford House Cemetery.
