Pte Thomas Houldsworth
British Army 9th Btn. York and Lancaster Regiment
from:Sheffield
(d.1st Jul 1916 )
Thomas Houldsworth was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, aged 32.
9th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment part of the 70th Brigade of the 23rd Division under Major-General J.M. Babington, Fourth Army III Corps who were engaged at the Somme from 1st of July 1916. 23rd Division was recruited as one of the New Army divisions recruited under the Kitchener Recruitment Plan.
His Service card indicates joined up (or re-joined) on 27th of August 1915 and was initially Lance Cpl but later Pte. No idea why his rank changed, maybe because he re-joined as a volunteer? Maybe other reasons?.
He received the three campaign medals posthumously, the Victory, Star, British Medals.
