Samuel Hobbs was born 29th September 1883 in Polruan, Cornwall
He joined the Royal Navy in 1900 and on the outbreak of WW1 he was a Petty Officer serving aboard HMS Glasgow. He had been at sea with the Glasgow since 1912.
He served aboard the Glasgow during action off Coronel, The Falkland Islands and the Juan Fernandez Islands.
In 1917 he arrived home after 4 years and 4 months on foreign service. He was drafted to HMS Deadalus also known as RNAS Cranwell until April 1918 when it was handed over the RAF.
He retired from the Royal Navy in 1924 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
