240390 Pte. Arthur Downs British Army 1st Btn. Royal Scots Fusiliers from:Stoke on Trent When Arthur Downs entered service in August 1914 he already had a baby daughter and a wife pregnant with another and she was born in February 1915. The name Downes was spelt without the e and this was how it was on the medals. His daughter born in February 1915 also had the surname spelt without the e. He had another two daughters and two sons. The first born of the two sons, Arthur Downes (called the same name after his father) served in the Second World War with the 1st Battalion Kings Shropshire Light Infantry and won the Military Medal in October 1944 whilst acting as a stretcher bearer on Monte Cece. His army number is 5125135. He is my wife's late father. His second son, William Downes, served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. His number is 596123.
