L/Sgt. William Henry French

British Army 2nd Battalion London Regiment

from:Bermondsey

(d.28th Feb 1918)

I don't know much about my great grandfather William French, apart from he joined around 1916. I haven't been able to find his service records but have a photo of his grave in France. He was a lance sergeant in the 2nd Battalion London Regiment. He died of his wounds on the 28th of February 1918 and is buried in Maroeuil British Cemetery in France.

Additional Information:

I believe William Henry John French (b. 21 July 1879) was the eldest brother of my grandfather Joseph James French (b. 1880 d. 1952). Their father was Henry William French (b. 1852 Kensington d. 7 Dec 1897 and their mother was Kate Wilcox (b. 1855 Winchcombe Glos. d. 1939 Swindon). I have the bill for H W French's funeral - £8 14s 6d. There were 13 children in this family of whom 3 died as children.

I have not been able to trace Bill French's military records. His MM is kept in the Royal Fusiliers Museum at The Tower of London. The medal records state his name was William Henry French. There are only 2 W H French who died in WW1 and the other was from Durham. They were not a family that kept in contact. I have photos of Bills grave, IV.G.6 at Maroeuil in winter and summer. A very well kept cemetery.

Paul French
