Sgt. M. Tickner

Additional Information:

Mornington Tickner born in Shere in 1897 who gave up his life for his country aged 19. He died taking part in the Battle of Flers- Courcelette during the third phase of the Battle of The Somme on Friday the 15th September 1916.

His regiment was the Coldstream Guards, he landed in France on the 2nd February 1915 and had seen fierce fighting throughout his service.

Prior to the outbreak of the First World War Mornington had enlisted in the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment, as did most men from this part of the country. On 8th August 1914 he transfered to the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. This young lad of 17 like many others did not, and could not have anticipated what they were about to embark on.

His Service record reads as follows;

Attested in Guildford 8th August 1914.

Appointed Lance Corporal 22nd October 1914.

Posted to France as Lance Corporal 3rd February 1915.

Promoted to Corporal 20th March 1915.

Appointed Lance Sergeant 15th August 1915.

Received full pay for the rank of Lance Sergeant 4th October 1915.

Promoted to Sergeant 20th October 1915.

Wounded at St. Jean, Ypres 19th April 1916 - (subsequently awarded the Military Medal for this action).

Killed in action Friday 15th September 1916 near Ginchy on the first day of the Battle of Flers-Courcelette during The Battle of The Somme.

Mornington's body was never found and he is remembered with honour on the Thiepval Memorial, the memorial to the missing on the Somme.
