William Soutter Burgess was aged 33 when he died on 12th April 1918 whilst serving with the 18th Battalion Durham Light Infantry.
Born in South Shields he was the son of the John Robert and Margaret Burgess (nee Veitch), husband of Margaret Burgess (nee Johnson) of Church House St. Paul's Church Jarrow. He lived and enlisted in Jarrow. On the 1911 census he is listed as William Soutter Burgess age 25 Insurance Agent living with His widowed father John Robert Burgess and family at 239 High Street, Jarrow
His 2 younger brothers James Burgess and Harry Burgess were of the fallen.
William is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial. He is commemorated on the Palmer Cenotaph (west face) Jarrow and on the Triptych in St. Paul's Church, Jarrow.
