Private John Edward Sands

British Army 7th Btn. Royal Sussex Regiment

from:Eastbourne, Sussex

(d.26th Nov 1917)

John Edward Sands was my grandfather. He was born in Eastbourne 17th September 1896. He enlisted in 7th Royal Sussex in August 1914, a month shy of his 18th birthday. I believe his Reg. No. means he was one of Lowther's Lambs, and that he received his fatal wounds at the first Battle of Cambrai. My grandmother received notification on 6th December 1917 that he'd died of his wounds on 26th November that same year at 55 Clearing Station. He was 21, and left behind a young widow and baby son, my father. He was subsequently buried at Tincourt Cemetery

Additional Information:

The information with this photo is incorrect inasmuch as I've since discovered there's uncertainty as to when my grandfather John Edward Sands SD/1615 (b:17 Sept.1896) actually enlisted and he intially joined the 12th Royal Sussex. He was later transferred to the 8th and then finally to the 7th Royal Sussex. The rest of the information is correct as regards his date of death, my grandmother's notification etc.

I've also been told that this is a photo of the 12th Royal Sussex taken 1915 before they went overseas.
