227599 Hella Von_Soest Civilian from:Germany I was born in 1942 and remember being held by a British soldier in Celle By Hannover during a small attack by one German desperado after Celle was already liberated. Then we lived near the Aller Bruecke which was kaputt. My dad, Karl von Souest was a POW in Italy. His group surrendered to the British near Belluno, Italy. He was in a camp by Bellaria, Rimini. We are still grateful he was not taken prisoner by the Russians like Uncle Johann Sturm who did not come back. We don't even know where he was buried. His wife Lena kept his picture on her nightstand all her life. We are forever grateful to the Allied forces for liberating us from Hitler's regime. My sisters Anka and Irmtraut remember the young soldiers. They were not allowed to fall in love with them. They were both teenagers at the time. The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items. The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors.
