About
1206497Albert Jacobus Joshua
Civilian
Albert Joshua was taken from Amsterdam in the Second World War and placed in internment camps due to him having a British passport and being of military age. He was moved to various internment camps over a period of 5 years. At the end of the war Albert docked in Scotland with only the clothes on his back and 5 pounds to his name! Since then he has lived England.Through this time in interment camps he kept very active (that's probably why he is still with us today at 92). He boxed, played football and would wake at 0600 just to go for a run. While Albert was in Ilag 8 kluczbork, 15-16 men tried to escape on New Year's Eve 1942 trough a break in the hospital window. One petty officer that tried to escape fell from the window and was badly injured. The next morning they all had to stand an hour on parade to find out who had escaped. He can remember his feet throbbing from standing in the snow.
In 1943 his father was evacuated to England by the Red Cross due to illness, from here he traveled to Portugal and back to England whilst ill. 1944 when the Russians broke through, they were evacuated to Spittal. Two days after the war ended they were liberated by 2 tanks and soldiers. At this point they were able to leave the camp once signed out. Food parcels were delivered along with metal to enable them to build an air strip to fly them all out.
However, soon after it emerged fighting was still taking place, so plans changed and they were evacuated by lorries. They traveled down to Ancona where they stayed in tents for 3/4 days. From there they traveled to Rome on train and were put in an old college, which was being used as a hospital for injured soldiers. From here they traveled to Naples where they were given 5 pounds to spend on ship that would dock in Scotland .
Ilag were internment camps for Allied Civilians. Under Ilag 8 three locations are listed
- ILag 8 Tost Toszek Poland
- ILag 8 H Tost Toszek Poland
- ILag 8/Z Oflag 6/Z Kreutzberg Lag 18 Upper Silesia.

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
