260015 Pte. David Tod British Army 2nd Btn. Suffolk Regiment from:29 Stobhill Road Gorebridge, Midlothian, Scotland (d.15th Apr 1944) My great-granddad, David Tod (formerly in the Royal Scots), served in Burma from 1941 to 1944 with the 2nd Suffolk Regiment. He was killed on 15th od April 1944 at age 34, on the ridges and hills around Ukhrul Road, on a topographical feature called 'Ring' or 'Pimple', by a Japanese sniper along with other men. Although he was seen dead, for it is reported in the unit’s war diary, and hastily buried, his marker was lost to time and his grave was never located to bury him in a commonwealth war cemetery. His body may have been dragged away down the backs of the 'Ring' ridge location as the surviving soldiers reported hearing slithering noises during the night that sounded like bodies being dragged away as the Japanese took clothes, weapons and other items of use for themselves. He was living in 29 Stobhill Road, Gorebridge, Midlothian with his wife Ann Tod and their children before going off to war. His wife never spoke of him and any photos lost. I am desperately trying to find any photos of Battalions and Units he was in so his son, my granddad also named David Tod who is now in his 80's, may see his father’s face again. He is commemorated on Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar (formerly Burma) for soldiers that have no grave.
