About
259961PO. Harold Hiscock
Royal Navy HMS Fox
from:Trinity, Newfoundland
(d.2nd Feb 1945)
Harold Hiscock's death record from WWII is in the UK, British Army and Navy Birth, Marriage and Death Records, 1730-1960. It lists him as a Petty Officer serving on HMS Fox but that he died as a POW. I would be interested in how someone serving in a shore establishment in Scotland became a POW.
Additional Information:
Harold Hiscock was a Newfoundland Canadian of the Royal Naval Patrol Service, remembered at Lowestoft Memorial, and a member of a seven man commando raiding party (Operation Checkmate) to Handesund, Norway, to sink German ships in harbour. Bit like the Cockleshell Heros film. HMS Fox was a shore base at Lerwick, Shetland, base for MTB raiders. Dropped off to canoe into harbour. Did limited amount of damage but sank one German minesweeper. Major search by German authorities and within month all were captured, with assistance from Norwegians. Interrogated locally but under Hitler's 'Commando Order' (execute regardless) all were handed over to S.S. and transported to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp where five were executed under authority of Hitler's 'Order'. P.O. Roe and A.B. Mayor were transferred to Belsen Concentration Camp where Roe died of Typhus and Mayor was executed on 7 April 1945. Other five had died on 2 February. Camp Commandant, Josef Kramer, (Beast of Belsen) on post war capture was specifically convicted at war crimes trial of Mayor's murder and himself was executed by the British. No remains of Party have been positively identified and are suspected to have been bulldozed into the great burial pits on the camp's liberations. Members are remembered on various memorials.stewart mcloughlin

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
