Frederick Hook was born in Cardiff in 1899. A veteran of WW1 serving initially in the Welsh Regiment from 1915 before transferring to the Machine Gun Corps. He settled in Bristol following demob in 1920 and married Ivy Henrietta Gill, they had eight children.He joined the Auxiliary Fire Service prior to the outbreak of WW2 and was initially stationed in the grounds of Southmead Hospital in Bristol. He was seriously injured as a result of enemy action whilst on duty in November 1943 and was medically discharged from the NFS in February 1944. He was subsequently awarded the Kings Badge for Loyal Service, spending a large proportion of the remainder of his life in hospital suffering from severe lung damage and died of his injuries on Christmas Day 1947. His life is commemorated on the National Firefighters Memorial in London, as well as on the Fire Brigade memorial in Bristol.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
