About
245500CQMS. Stanley Horace Turner
British Army 216 Searchlight Training Unit, SS8, SO SSR, SSR15 South Staffordshire Regiment
from:Dinnington, Sheffield, Yorkshire
My Grandfather, Stanley Turner, died in 1978 without saying much about his time in the Army. I have managed to obtain details of his time in the Army from the MOD. There is however a couple of dates missing and would love to see these blanks filled in. I know he spent time in Northern Ireland because my grandma, Ethel Turner, said she was pregnant with my Auntie at that time. I was told that his wife, Ethel and 2 children, lived with a farming family in Northern Ireland but once again I cannot find any information on the events, except that my Aunt was born in Comber, Northern Ireland in Jan 1942.He enlisted into the 1st South Staffordshires on the 12th of September 1928, was appointed Lance Corporal on the 31st of July 29 and promoted Corporal 29th of April 34. He Transferred to Army Reserve 11th of September 35 having completed his enlistment. He rejoined for Army Service on the 18th of August 1939 and was posted to 216th Searchlight Training Unit, appointed Acting Sergeant on 2nd of September 1939 and Granted War Substantive Sergeant on 2nd of December 1939. He was Posted from 8th Holding Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment to SO South Staffordshire Regiment on the 8th of June 1940 and at some point Posted to 15th South Staffordshire Regiment. He attended an NCO's Course at 61st Air School from the 1st to 12th of December 1940 and was Appointed Acting CQMS on 3rd of May 1941, then Granted CQMS on the 30st of October 1941. He was in Northern Ireland in January 1942 and his last Posting was the Faroes and he finished his war years there, being Released to Reserve in the 1st of December 1945 and Discharged on the 10th of February 1954 on the Termination of his Engagement. Medals issued were the Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-45

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
