World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Tpr. Arthur Henry "Mick" Sullivan

British Army 3rd Btn. Royal Tank Regiment

from:Walthamstow

Arthur Sullivan is my father, he died in 1965 when I was a young girl. I know from items that I have, that he was a regular solider and was with his regiment the 9th Lancers in Sialkot which was then in India now Pakistan in 1930 and then for some reason which I have yet to find out he was transferred to 13th/18th Hussars and served with this regiment between 1931 and 1935. After this date I have not be able to ascertain were he was posted. I have only recently found out about him being a POW. He was captured at Tobruk. I think the date was 27th May 194.2 I do not know whether it was the Germans or the Italians who captured him but he ended up in a POW Camp in Italy. From information on record this was POW Camp 65. He escaped from the camp, but I do not know the date when this happened although I have questioned some of my older relations about this and they have told me that when the Italians thought that the Americans were coming they released the prisoners in POW Camp 65 Cressina (Gravina Altamura) thinking that this may help protect the women and children in the area. Unfortunately it was not the Americans but the Germans who arrived. Apparently my father escaped and ran into a local resistance group and stayed with them until 1944 when he rejoined his regiment. The regiment was then sent to Germany to help clear a POW camp, I do not know which one, but I have been told that he had to sign a document not to say anything about the conditions in the camp and that there was a very infectious disease which someone said was Cholera. My Father never spoke about the war but he used to have terrible nightmares up until the day he died.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
