231943Stf.Sgt. Samuel Francis Gillette
United States Army Company C 242 Infantry Regiment
from:Greece, NY USA
Frank Gillette served with 242 Infantry Regiment, Company C. in Rainbow Division. He enlisted on the 23rd of August 1943 and sepnt 4 months as a Private including basic training. He was promoted to Sergeant and spent 21 months as a Squad leader before becoming a Staff Sargeant, and spending 2 months as Platoon Sargeant. He was a Troop Leader at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma.He served with the 42nd Infantry Division in France, Luxembourg and Germany as a squad leader. Supervised eleven men in the capturing of enemy positions by directing and controlling their fire and movement. Was captured by the Germans and was a prisoner of war in Germany for four months and was liberated by the Russian Army on the 24th of April 1945. Was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge for efficiency as a rifleman. Frank was given an honorable discharge on the 30th of November 1945.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
