World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

231081

F/O. John Ellyatt

Royal Air Force 10 Squadron

from:West Hartlepool

(d.10th June 1944)

I am the representative in Mayenne French Remembrance which ensures the maintenance of the graves of French soldiers and foreigners in my department. In Laval, in particular, 14 airmen from two RAF crews of 10 Squadron Halifax fell in Laval on 10th June 1944. On May 8th, the colours of the RAF will rise above their graves, flowers laid by children and elders of the French Air Force and their honours are rendered. I would like to complete the record I have made of this sad event, if possible with a picture of these two crews. Does anyone have one?

The crew members buried in Laval (Valfleury) Communal Cemetery, E Sub-Sec. D Row 1, are:

  • P/O Fred Beales, J/89951, age 20, Royal Canadian Air Force (Canadian), joint grave 42945-42946.
  • Sgt Hugh Bradbury, 1425774, age 20, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), grave 42939.
  • Sgt Leslie Arthur Brotherton, 1576786, age 24, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), grave 42937.
  • F/O Gilbert Daniel, 151788, age 22, Royal Air Force (United Kingdom), grave 42947.
  • F/O John Ellyatt, 51911, age 27, Royal Air Force (United Kingdom), grave 42943.
  • Sgt Philip Gaines, 1549492 Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), grave 42942.
  • F/O Norman Randall Henderson, 144341, age 21, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), joint grave 42940.
  • P/O Thomas Whyndam Henderson, 415981, age 27, Royal Australian Air Force (Australian), grave 42941.
  • F/O Robert Keith Marshall, 151917, Age 30, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), grave 42949.
  • Sgt Albert Mason, 2211801, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), grave 42948.
  • Sgt Stanley William Peake, 1606629, age 36, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), grave 42938.
  • Sgt Alfred Charles Perkins, 1461925, age 22, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), joint grave 42945-42946.
  • F/O Willem Jacob Van Stockum, 144600, age 33, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), grave 42944.
  • Flt.Sgt Edward Charles Wicks, 1376921, age 33, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (United Kingdom), joint grave 42940.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
