About
206251Flt Sgt. Arthur Thomas Garrett
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 61 Squadron
from:London
(d.25th Feb 1944)
My uncle served in 61 sqdn and I am trying to find out some more details about his service. The family story goes that when he and his fellow crew were shot down there was some confusion as to who was on the aircraft. My grandparents were told a number of stories and this only led to more confusion. If anyone can throw some light on this tale for myself and my family we would be very grateful. Unfortunatly all my grandparents letters and papers have been lost over the years.Editors Note: RAF Bomber Command Losses records that Lancaster DV294 QR-K took off at 18:28 on the 25th of Feburary 1944 from Coningsby and crashed at Menil-Annelles in the Ardennes, 10 km South East of Rethel. The crew all lie at Liesse Communal Cemetery.

Additional Information:
Sgt W. Craig is my uncle. Bill Craig came from Larkhall, a miming village outside Glasgow and was married to my mothers oldest sister Margaret. They had a daughter(also Margaret) and according to my mother Vera Garret brought her daughter to Glasgow from Burnley ? to meet with them. Vera didnt keep well, but her mother Mrs Howarth continued to visit Glasgow on many occasions. Mrs Howarth and My Grandmother (Maggie Robertson) had an interest in the spiritualist church. Margaret and Bills daughter sadly passed aged 37 and is survived by her son.Steven Ross

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
