World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII

Elsie Dillon

Women's Land Army

from:Bebington, Wirral

(d. )

My mother's name was Elsie Jones, formerly Dillon. She was born in Bebington Wirral, the youngest of five children, one of whom died in childhood. She married my father in 1941 when my father was given leave before departing overseas to fight. I am not sure exactly when she joined the Land Army, but I know she was stationed at Grovesnor Park Chester. She told of a few billets around Chester some good some not so good, but all her experiences seemed to be fun, she was very fond of telling tales of her time with the Land Army.

After she was married she became Head Girl, much to the annoyance of her older sister Flo Dillon, who joined later and therefore became her junior. I think my mum enjoyed giving her orders, it was payback time for the way she had been treated during her childhood by her sister. She did tell me one of her duties was to display fresh flowers in the town hall in Chester, her boss at the time was Fred Williams, he later took residence in the lodge to Grovesnor Park, and married a lovely lady called Ida. I remember visiting them many years later with my parents, they always made a big fuss as they had no children of their own, I was fascinated by the ammount of antiques they had in the house.

Mum died in November 1999 a few days after her 58th wedding anniversary, Dad died in 2006, as an only child I am still going through his papers, then someone told me about this site and as she never received any medal I would be grateful if you could put me forward to receive what would be hers. She did receive a proficiency certificate for "Outdoor Garden Work" signed G.Denman in 1944

Editors Note: Unfortunatley Land Army medals are not currently awarded posthumously.
