Enid Joan Sansom . Women's Land Army WLA, Bunny from Mansfield Joan Sansom was a teenager when she started at Bunny. She is still alive, now 94 (as of Nov 2016) and living in Mansfield and has all her faculties. However, details of the work she did in the 1940s is very slim.
I would love to find a photo of her with the girls she served with at Bunny.

Pte. Harold William Sansome . British Army 2nd Btn. Leicestershire Regiment from Leicester Harold Sansome served his country from 15th March 1940 to 6th May 1946.
His medals were the 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and the War Medal. At the end of the war my father was batman to Colonel Guy German, who had just been released from captivity in a German POW camp.

Cpl. Jack Sanson . British Army 5th Btn. Sherwood Foresters from Bradford Dad, Jack Sanson told me about fighting in Tunisia, how Americans would drive past their positions in the mountains asking "where's the shooting match, Bud?".
They would get a bollocking for driving with their lights on and betraying British positions.
He told me about Salerno and HMS Warspite shelling the Germans. He was very reticent to speak about how he came to be wounded: I know it was after Salerno and involved crossing a river, maybe the Volturno? He described being carried to the water and comrades being shot at by paratroopers as they got him to the other bank.
If it was the Volturno then the crossing would have been at or near Cancello, the Foresters were hammered there.
I am desperate for any information about that crossing: A, B and C Coy's of 2nd Bbattalion. I have some after action reports but need to pin down which Companyy Jack Sanson was in.

Joseph Charles Sanson . Royal Navy HMS Nelson My dad, Joe Sanson was on Nelson, Valiant, Endevour, Rodney these were just a few, he boxed for the navy served in Scotland, Malta and in dry dock in Simon Town SA.

Cpl. Eric Norman Sant . Royal Air Force No 22 OTU from Wolverhampton Eric Sant served at RAF Wellesbourne during 1941 as an armourer.

Cpl. Rocco A. "Rocky" Santarciero . US Army Infantry from Port Chester New York Rocco Sandarciero entered into the service on 28th of February 1943 at 19 years of age with his brother William (36). Already serving was his brother Joseph (22) in Trinidad, Anthony (30) Infantry 77th in the Pacific and Angelo(25) who was killed at the Battle of the Bulge.
Rocco saw action in North Africa and was taken prisoner in Italy and sent to Stalag 2B Hammerstein Work Camp in January 1944 and released May 1945.

Luis G. Santiago . United States Army 9th Infantry Div from New York City My father, Luis G. Santiago, was an American POW at Stalag 7A in Moosberg from 1944 onwards. He was in the US 9th Infantry Division and was captured in Belgium. He was born in Puerto Rico but lived in New York City before and after the war. He died in 1997. I'd appreciate any information about him or the camp.

Sgt. George Sarbutts . British Army Royal Army Medical Corps from Ormskirk My dad, George Sarbutts joined the RAMC on 17th of June 1940 and served until 19th of September 1947, and I do know he went over to France on D-Day, 6th of June 1944.

Sgt. Donald Charles Sargeant . British Army 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards from Poole, Dorset Donald Sargeant was a machine gunner. He served throughout the War in North Africa and Italy. He ended up in Gorizia, on the Yugoslav border, where he met and married my mum in 1945.

AC1. Donald Arthur Sargent . Royal Air Force from LLandudno (d.4th Aug 1945) Donald A Sargent was my Uncle. He died 4th August 1945 in Sungei Ron POW camp in Sumatra. I wondered if there is anyone out there who may have known him or served with him. I know he was based at RAF Seletar in Singapore and was captured in the Malacca straits in an RAF Motor Launch.
I would be grateful for any help in finding out more.

Bdsm. George Sargent . British Army 15th/19th Rgt. King's Royal Hussars My father was in the 15th/19th King's Royal Hussars Regiment and a POW from 1940. He was in a few camps but one I remember is Stalag 8b. He was wounded at Dunkrik and captured.

Sgt. James Samuel Sargent DFM.. Royal Air Force 82 Squadron from Godmanchester James Sargent is my father but, as I was not born until 1945, I don't know too much about his time at RAF Watton except that he was a member of 82 Squadron, flying Blenheim bombers. He was a navigator and flew with Taff Watkins (pilot) and Eric Chandler (gunner). Later, when 82 sqn. was sent to Malta, his aircraft was badly damaged by flak and the pilot (Taff Watkins)was badly wounded in the legs. Although not trained as a pilot, my dad managed to fly the aircraft back to base (Luqa)and Taff Watkins regained enough consciousness to land safely. For this, he was awarded the DSO and Eric Chandler and my father were both awarded the DFM.
My dad continued to fly throughout the war and had a long career in the RAF, retiring as a Sqn. Ldr. Taff, Eric and my dad remained lifelong and both Taff and Eric were my godfathers.

Mstr Sgt. Wiliam Cannon "W C" Sargent . United States Army from Atlanta, Georgia My father was a POW in Stalag 5A during World War II. He was an American from Atlanta, Georgia. He passed away in 2001 but left me an audio tape of his experience during the War and as a POW at Stalag 5A ( He almost never openly discussed it). I am now in the process of transcribing his words. I would like very much to see photos of the camp if any are available. His tapes describe in detail the bitter cold and lack of food. I will provide more info when the tapes are transcribed.

Michael Sarsfield . British Army Coldstream Guards from Jarrow, England My uncle Michael Sarsfield served with the Coldstream Guards and was captured at Tobruk. He was four years in prisoner of war camp in Germany. He was freed at end of war and returned to Jarrow, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England.

Pte. Michal Sasin . British Army Pioneer Corps My late father Michal Sasin was a former soldier, with the international brigade in Spain 1936-1938. He
was found wounded in France around the 13th to 15th of June 1940. He was a Czech soldier promoted to captain, working at the Czechoslovakian Embassy. He was fleeing France and was found and transported to England.
After hospitalisation in Manchester he was billeted at Cholmondeley Castle. There was at the time a mutiny, some refused to obey their foreign commanding officers. My father was one of the mutineers. It was resolved when some, like my father, joined and served in the pioneer corps. I found some records where he disbanded (probably out of frustration) and was brought back into the Czech Army in 1943, where he was based in the UK till 1945. His army number was J1819 (NT Div.)
I would be grateful if anyone has any additional information about my late father who later returned to Czechoslovakia. He was arrested during the communist era but he miraculously escaped into Germany in 1949. He was re-arrested and imprisoned in a labour camp. Finally, he was in an agreed trade off and was released and came to the UK in around 1955. Although severely treated, he survived till 1977.

WO/2 Joseph Elzear Sasseville . Royal Canadian Air Force 295 Sqdn. from Quebec (d.19th February 1943) Fourteen aircraft from 295 Squadron were tasked with a raid on three electricity transformers at Distre, near Saumur. Two aircraft were brought down by anti-aircraft fire. The crew who died on this mission and are buried in Saumur Communal Cemetery are:

Mess Room Boy. Robert Satchfield . Merchant Navy SS Magdalena (d.18th Sep 1940) Robert Satchfield was the son of Isabella Dudgeon (late Satchfield) and stepson of Robert Dudgeon of Jarrow. He served with the Merchant Navy as a mess room boy on SS Magdalena. He died in September 1940 aged 17.
Robert is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial and is also commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Satterfield . United States of America Air Force 434th Troop Carrier Group 73rd Troop Carrier Sqdn. My father was in the 73rd Troop Carrier Squadron of the 434th Troop Carrier Group, 9th Air Force. Just prior to D-Day he was stationed at Aldermaster, where they trained and rehearsed for that big event.
