Jack Simmonds .     Royal Air Force

Jack Simmonds My grandfather was an RAF pilot in WW2 and was shot down 6/7/41 and was captured in the morning of the 7/7/41 and taken to Stlag Luft 2 and escaped for a couple of a days and then was captured again and sent to Stlag Luft 3 where he and other spent the rest of the war in and his 21st birthday. He was eventually was released and went and married my late granny, Mary Simmonds. that is all at the moment that we know about him

Stk. James Simmonds .     Royal Navy HMS Nigeria

A few photographs from my dad's scrapbook. Jimmy Simmonds is front row, second left, and a few of the crew, probably from the engine room. I believe his mate, G. Shepherd, is front row, third left. I am still trying to put a name to the rest of the fellas in the photo.

My father Jimmy Simmonds served as a stoker on the Nigeria from 1941-45. He kept a bit of a scrap-book cum photo album of the time, along with a couple of mementoes like the crest. Crew members mentioned along with photos are G.Shepherd, Buster Brown, T. Cleary, Slugger Wood, Jock Milne, McGee and J. Bergen. He joined the ship at Scapa where she was inspected by King George, and was at first on the Arctic convoys to Murmansk. In 1942 he was on the Malta convoy where the Nigeria was torpedoed. The only recollection of this time he passed on to me was how the hatches were screwed down when the torpedo hit and although terrified, like everyone there I should imagine, was too busy to be affected by it. Xmas that year was spent in Charleston U.S.A. where Nigeria had made her way for repairs. His scrapbook mentions a Capt Dundas, Capt Paton, and Capt King. Later in the war he went various places including Norway, Gib, Suez, Aden, Ceylon, Sabang, Australia, & Bombay. He was demobbed in Nov 45 and like much of his generation who had lived through a war thereafter lived life to the full. In 1974 after 40 years of marriage he died suddenly aged 61.

My father, Leslie Simmonds had the Jerboa insignia on his shirt in a photo and served in the 8th Army. Records are very far and few because of my mother burning his processions a few years ago. He was from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Can anyone help me with details of his service?

WO Norman William Simmonds .     Royal Air Force   from Tewkesbury, Glos.

He died in a car accident in 1973.

(d.14th Apr 1942)

Pte. Peter Samual Simmonds .     British Army Middlesex Regiment   from 18 The Alders, Hanworth, Middlesex

My uncle, Peter Simmonds joined up when he was 18 years old. He was on board the HMS Penelope as a Gunner from the Middlesex Regiment, when it sank after being hit by a German torpedo on 18th of February 1944. He was in the water for days hoping to be rescued. My mum told me a story about how her brother Peter and other men were falling asleep in the water. Dolphins came and would nudge them conscious again, this helped the men and stopped them from drowning. If any one else was told this dolphin story can they let me know. I was also told that the ship went horizontal and my uncle could never forget the poor men below him trying to climb up, but had nothing to hang onto so they slid down the deck. This was so sad and was a memory that haunted him. When he was rescued he was taken somewhere for weeks to recover and the family had not been informed by the Navy that the ship had sunk. Luckily the family were told, before it was announced on the radio, by someone else who knew that my uncle had survived and was recovering, which was a great relief for our family.

PFC. Ezra W. "Jodie" Simmons .     US Army 509th Parachute Infantry Battlion   from Sheridan, LA

My Uncle Ezra W. Simmons (my Mother's brother) was a POW in Stalag 2B during WW2, he was with the 509th Parachute Infantry Battlion, which was the first American Unit to parachute into combat in November 1942. He would only talk about the war with other vets, such as my Father. I did hear him say that he almost froze to death many times in that camp.

He was from Sheridan, LA. After the war, he went on to be a commercial fisherman and alligator hunter on the Pearl River at Slidell, La. I remember him as a very rugged man, who was "not" afraid of anything.

Uncle Jodie was married, and had one son. His wife died, and his son was killed in an accident. Uncle Jodie died in the 1970's. I do remember that he and my aunt went to a couple of reunions somewhere with the group he was with during the war. Hopefully, this info will help someone else in some way.

When he was alive, I never realized the sacrifice he and others made, and never did thank him for that sacrifice. I sure wish I would have. We owe alot to the WW2 Vets. Thank you Vets.

Cpl. Frederick Edmund "Simmo" Simmons .     British Army South Staffordshire Regiment   from Chesterfield

My dad, Frederick Simmons arrived at Arnhem by glider from (I believe) Boston Spa Airfield, and was subsequently wounded in the leg at Oosterbeek and was taken prisoner. He was operated on by a German Army doctor. He told me he was at the Hartenstein Hotel when the failed attempt by the RAF to resupply the survivors was made. The wounded prisoners were put into railway freight wagons for shipment to prison camp. He ended up in Stalag 11B. I remember him telling me the Germans treated the prisoners very badly and dad was made to work in an iron ore mine. There were also Russian POWs in a separate part of the camp and they were treated even more harshly. On one occasion someone killed a German guard dog and smuggled it to the Russians who ate it and spread the skin on the barbed wire.

Fredrick Simmons .     British Army Kings Royal Rifles   from Barnet, Herts

My father Fredrick Simmons served with the Kings Royal Rifles during WW2. I am trying to research his war record. I don't know that much about what he did. I do know he was at El Alamein and I know he was badly injured behind enemy lines at the Battle of Salerno in Italy. If anybody can fill in a few of the gaps I would be very grateful.

G Simmons .     British Army

G Simmons served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
