Pvt. Alfred Mario Rios . United States Army from Chicago, Il.
My father Alfred Mario Rios was captured somewhere around 6/28/1944 at the North African Theatre, Italy and held at Stalag 2B. He supposedly escaped with another man and they were the only two to make it out at the time. Can anyone help remember anything about my father?
Pte. Oswald "Gus" Riou . British Army Royal Artillery
Gus Riou was my grandfather and I believe he was the last man to be rescued from the sea at St Valery in 1940
Sgt. Harry Lawrence Ripley . British Army Grenadier Guards
In brief, my father Sgt H.L Ripley was shot in the leg at Anzio in, I believe May 1944. I still have his war diary and medals, but I'm a little naive to alot of it, as I was alot younger when he told me his war stories, hence I didnt take much interest. now I'm now somewhat older, and find it more interesting. Anyway, after he was shot he was taken prisoner, and ended up in Stalag 4b. Although, I believe, he may have begun his days in Stalag 4a, as I found a POW no. 40154 which stated it was Stalag 4a. The only other thing I remember was, after the war, and to the day he died-1991, he would not eat swedes. Too much of it in the camp, I believe.

W Ripley served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Dvr. Douglas Haig Rippin . British Army Royal Army Service Corps from 29 Adelaide Buildings, Poplar, London
Douglas Rippin was my Grandfather, I was only six when he died and unfortunately he only spoke about the war to his father. The only information I know is his regiment and that he was a driver, driving supplies and passengers. I've been told he drove for Monty Vera Lynn and David Niven. Apparently he ended up in Brest and he was at Normandy. Any help in finding out more would be welcomed.

Ldg Sto Robert Charles Rist . Royal Navy HMS Pembroke from Edmonton, London
F/O Aliston Rank Gray Ritch . Royal Canadian Air Force 57 Squadron (d.5th Feb 1943)
On the night 4-5 February 1943, an Avro Lancaster I, serial ED352, code DX-Q, of squadron n°57 of 5 Bomber Group, Royal Air Force, based at Scampton Lincolnshire took off for a bombing raid on Turin. In terrible weather the plane crashed on the slopes of Belleface in the mountains of the Massif de la Pointe de Terrasse opposite the small hamlet of Crêt Bettex, ten kilometres north of Bourg Saint Maurice, Savoie, France. All seven crew members were killed.
There was thick snow covering the spot at the time but as the snow melted a search was set up by the Italian army of occupation. At the end of June 1943 two bodies and later three more were recovered from a snow drift in the area. On July 1st the Italian authorities requested the town council of Bourg Saint Maurice to make coffins and to dig graves to bury these airmen. Eight bodies enclosed in six coffins were carried from the village of Les Chapieux to Bourg Saint Maurice with the assistance of the Italian authorities. On July 5th July a religious service was held in the Parish church and the burial took place in the local churchyard in the presence of the local council, the local police officer and officers of the Italian Army who buried the dead with Military Honours. In 1950 the bodies were exhumed and transferred for burial to the British Military Cementry of Saint Germain au Mont d'Or, Rhône, France

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
