World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Stkpr. John Ernest "Jack" Paine .     Merchant Navy SS Gloucester Castle   from Millwall

(d.15th July 1942)

My merchant seaman grandfather Jack Paine died in July 1942 when the Gloucester Castle was sunk by the German cruiser Michel. I have some information about it and know there were a number of survivors. I want as much information I can get, including stories from any survivors, and I also want to find out if my father's cousin, who came from Canada, was also killed on the ship.

Pte. William Troy Paine .     United States Army 326th Medical Corps   from Memphis, TN

My father, William Troy Paine (Bill), served in the US Army from 1943 to 1945. He was a medic with the 326th Medical Corps, 101st Airborne Division. He participated in "Market Garden" and landed in Zon. He worked for months at the regimental hospital near the Wilhelmina Canal and was later captured at the "Battle of the Bulge" in Bastogne, Belgium on December 19, 1944. He, along with other prisoners, marched in the snow for days and was packed into railroad cars where they could only stand. He was taken to Stalag IV-B. His POW dogtag No. 316777. He remained there until he was liberated by the Russians.

He did not speak of his experience in the camp often, but he did recall the body lice, hepatitis, and the weight loss. Throughout his life, whenever it snowed my father broke out in a neurogenic rash.

There was one person who he spoke of in the whole camp. This was an Asian American in his barracks. The reason he remembered this man is because he would walk up and down the barracks and say "There are three great men in this world.... Roosevelt... Churchill... and Me (the prisoner stated his name)!"

The closest he came to getting killed in WWII was while he was on a work detail to gather wood. The American planes accidentally strafed the prisoners, killing many. The next day the American planes dropped a wreath over the camp.

Upon liberation by the Russians, he and two other prisoners escaped the Russians. They had to steal cheese from the basement of a German home to survive the trek from the camp to the American lines across the Elbe River.

My father died in July 2010. I know little about his time in Stalag IV-B If anyone has any more information on that or his trek to the Elbe please contact me.

Sgt. Peter "Skip" Pajich .     US Army B Coy. 106th Infantry Regt.   from Pittsburgh, PA

My father, Peter Pajich, died in 2002, a happy man. He felt like a king most of his life because of the suffering he had as a prisoner of war in Germany. He was a POW for 6 months in Stalag 4B. He spoke of many things but the major memories I, his daughter, have is the fact that he did not get to eat anything but bread. They tried to eat rotten apples from the ground and cockroaches even. They were given very little water. He had body lice most of the time. He said he didn't take his boots off for 6 months. He came out of boot camp at 169 lbs. and came home from POW camp at 89. He saw many die there. He was a 'lucky' one. I am very proud to say he was my father.

Trpr. George Thomas Palfrey .     British Army Tank Corps   from Barnet

My dad was Trooper George T. Palfrey in the Eight Army captured at Tobrook in May 1941 (I believe) then taken by boat to Italy, and sent onto Germany. My dad as far as I know from a rubber stamp on the back of a photo that my cousin phoned me about on Sunday, was also in Stalag IVG. Dad worked in quarries for three and half years, and it upsets me to even write about it. But I want to make a visit to where the camp was, as dad, who would have been 100 years old this coming November, always wanted to go back. He was not able to as that part of Germany was behind the Iron Curtain then. All that I know is that the POW Camp that dad was in was close to Leipzig, and now I have this camp number from the back of an old photo.

That little photo, of my cousin George who was 4 months old when it was taken, was carried by my dad all through those terrible times and also has an Italian stamp on it. Sadly his sister, George's mum, died while having another baby 18 months later. Dad was not told until he returned to England.

Jerzy Palimaka .     Polish Army   from Czestochowa

My father was detained at Stalag 1B POW camp Hohenstein between 1939-1940. I am seeking anyone who might have known him or who may have photographs.

Lt2. Arthur Palladino .     United States Army 785th Bomb Squadron 466th Bomb Group   from Revere, MA

Arthur Palladino was the Bombardier on the Lady Lightning a B-24 in 785th Bomb Squadron, 466th Bomb Group of the 2nd division of the 8th Army Air Corp, stationed at Attlebridge, Norwich, England (Base #120). His plane was shot down on 15th of Aug 1944 over the Netherlands. 4 of the crew were killed, 5 taken POW and 1 evaded capture. Arthur was held at Stalag Luft 1, North Compound, in Barth until liberated at the end of the war. As of 4 Feb 2017 he is still living at age 95.

L/Sgt. George Arthur Pallister .       from Durham

(d.17th Oct 1944)

Flying Officer Alan Cairns Palmer .     RAF Lancaster ED 542 106 Squadron (d.3rd April 1943)

Stok. Arthur Palmer .     Royal Navy

Barbara Dilys Palmer .     Women's Land Army   from Pensford, Somerset

I was interviewed in Bath in January 1942 at the age of 19 and received a letter with the option of immediate training at an "approved" farm or in the following September at Cannington Farm Institute. I decided to go to an approved farm and was sent to Upper Farm, Brean for a month starting in February. My father took me by car to see the farm on a bleak day in January and said "You can't go there!" but I had a letter from the farmer, Mr Tucker, with a date to commence and decided to go ahead.

On the appointed day I caught a train to Brent Knoll but had to wait at the tiny station for what seemed a very long time as Mrs Tucker, who was supposed to meet me, was delayed because she was playing bridge!

I was excused milking the first morning, but after that it was up at half past six every morning! Fortunately, having been living in the country I already knew how to milk a cow. One day I remember was when I was given a bucket and told to go to a large field and pick up stones, as the field was due to be mown the next day and the stones could damage the mowing machine. I'm still not sure if this was some sort of test. At the end of the month Mr Tucker asked me if I would like to stay on and said "Yes please!" I lived in the farmhouse with the delightful family. I was very disappointed at the first Christmas when I was told I couldn't go home - the cows still had to be milked!

Fortunately living on a farm, food always seemed to be in good supply, including an extra ration of cheese if you were in the land army. I didn't like cheese at the time but Mr Tucker was happy to have my ration! One day in 1943 a German plane dropped an incendiary bomb, which contained many incendiary "bomblets"; these large bombs were dropped on a parachute and were supposed to open and spread the bomblets over the area, but this one failed to open properly. Seeing the large bomb on a parachute Mr Tucker thought it was a man parachuting down and told us to stay indoors while he and other members of the Home Guard went to investigate. After the bomb was made safe the large silk parachute was put to good use by the local ladies and we all had nice new underwear!

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
