World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

PFC. Edward Walter Perlack .     United States Army 106th Golden Lions   from Lowell, Massachusetts, USA

My father Edward W. Perlack fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was captured on Christmas Eve 1944 in Germany. I am so proud of him but unfortunately he passed in January 1987 I wish I had known more about what he had endured. Any information about 106th Golden Lions would be appreciated.

Giorgio Perlasca .     Italian Army

A food purchasing manager for the Italian Army in during WWII, Giorgio was put into a position where he had to pretend he was the substitute for the Spanish ambassador in Budapest. When the ambassador was asked to leave the country, he again took to his impersonating talents this time, as a Spanish consul. he then proceeded to naturalize thousands of Hungarian Jews into Spanish citizens through the Rivera Law, thus, saving them from deportation and harm. It was not until many years after the war that Giorgio's story became known to the world. It seemed that after he returned to Italy, he never spoke about what he did back in Hungary even to his family. Fortunately, some Hungarian girls went on a quest to find the Spanish consul who saved them.

Pvt. Richard A. Perlich .     United States Army 335 Infantry, Company K 84th Division   from Minneapolis

My father writes: (March 31, 1993)

"Dear David Schenck,

I was surprised at how much information you had about me. I was captured near Rochefort on Christmas morning with Pvts. Summit and Hartsell (a sgt?, and Lt Stumberg from our Company K, 335th Regt. And at least two others from another company that we connected up with as we got out of Rochefort (under fire) and attempted to get to Marche to rejoin our Company K.

The Lt. and I were wounded and so was one of the other guys from the other company, so we didn't get too far and when it got dark we broke into a roadhouse to get some sleep. The Germans captured us early Christmas morning.

I can't remember the dates but the best I can recollect is that I was in Limburger for about a week or ten days in early January. Now, after an "exhausting" search of my "files" I have found a letter written November 17th, 1945, which says that I (we) left XIIA on January 22nd, 1945, on a four day boxcar ride to Stalag IIA, New Brandenburg , where I was held until approximately March 9, 1945 when we were taken on a march that lasted until April 13, 1945.

We were liberated near Magdeberg, Germany by US Army troops. (The Old Hickory Division...don't remember the number). At that time we were sent by truck to Hildesheim, Germany, for delousing and then flown to Camp Lucky Strike where I was hospitalized for infections and malnutrition. Aprils 18, 1945 to May 10, 1945 in the 77th Field Hospital and 306th General Hospital. I was sent to the States as a wounded POW on May 20th, so it looks as though we just missed each other, both at Gerolstein and Limburger, and I'm sorry I don't remember Harris, Baker, and Althaus whom you mentioned in your letter.

Sincerely, Richard A. Perlich 17144050

P.S. Battle Of The Bulge Then And Now- pg. 364, bottom of page. I'd swear that's a picture of the street on which I was hit."

Sgt. George Oscar Perrot MID.     RNZAF 99 Squadron RAF   from Masterton

The following is paraphrased from a letter written by Flying Officer George Oscar Perrot, addressed to Officer Commanding, No.2 (B.R.) Squadron, dated 9th August 1944.

"I left New Zealand on the 27th July 1939 in charge of a draft of wireless operators, to proceed to the United kingdom in order to fly Wellington aircraft to New Zealand. (At that time I was a Wireless Operator Mechanic.)

On arrival in England I was posted to No.99 (Bomber) Squadron, and served in this unit from 1st. September 1939 until August 1941. I was not at any time on the Headquarters strength of any station, but served as NCO in charge of all squadron aircraft radio equipment under adverse conditions due to enemy action, and later as NCO in charge of WO/AG's in the equivalent position of the Signals Leader of today. No.99 Squadron was engaged on operations throughout this whole period, and a detached flight operated from a base in France during the first six months of 1940.

Although I originally left New Zealand as a potential aircrew wireless operator, I was only engaged on Non-Operational flying during my tour of duty with the Squadron."

    P.O. Alfred J Perry .     Royal Navy HMS Nigeria (d.12th Aug 1942)

My Grandfather, Petty Officer Alfred J Perry, served on the HMS Nigeria during 'Operation Pedestal'. He was killed on the 12th August 1942 after the Nigeria had been torpedoed by the Axum. My Mum was 2 years old and never met her Father, she only had a couple of photographs.

This site has been a trove of information, I look forward to reading more stories as they are added.

    P.O. Alfred J. Perry .     Royal Navy HMS Nelson (d.12th Aug 1942)

Arthur R. Perry .     British Army Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry

My Dad, Arthur R Perry served at K camp_ 2 baseworkshops. REME M.S.F. Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry, which was part of 8th Army Tobruk. He sailed from England on the SS Volendam. He was a dispatch rider and looked after a dog named Topper that had belonged to someone who must have passed away. Dad survived the war and passed away in 1991.

Sgt. Colin Gordon Perry .     Royal Air Force B flight 150 Squadron   from Harrow, Middx

My Father, Colin Perry, served in the Air Force during WW2 joining up in 1939 at the age of 19 years. I know he qualified as an air gunner and wireless operator and flew many ops in North Africa and Sicily. He mainly flew in Wellingtons but his log book does show he also flew in Dakotas and Mosquitos.

As like most people I never asked him much about his war time experiences and he did not talk about it. He had a picture painted of his plane with the markings of JNV if this means anything to anyone. I have tried to trace some of the names mentioned as his crew:

    • Pilot F/Sgt S J Holmes,
    • Navigator Sgt JU Trewick, Bomb Aimer,
    • F.Sgt L Stanford,
    • Rear Gunner Sgt R J Sillwood
. I have a feeling some of this crew could be Canadian. The main dates of ops appear to be from late 1942 until December 1943. If anyone has any information about my Dad, or any of his crew, I would love to hear from them.

Denis Perry .     Royal Air Force
