Gnr. Leslie Newham .     British Army 1st Air Landing Regiment Royal Artillery   from Halifax, West Yorkshire

My uncle, Leslie Newham, was one of the first soldiers to land in Arnhem in Sept 1944. Unfortuntely, he was captured by the Germans on 26th of September 1944 and taken to a German P.O.W camp. He was initially taken to Stalag 12A & was then transferred to Stalag 4B. He was being transferred again on 28 Jan & was marching westwards when he was released on 30 Jan 1945 when the Soviet Red Army liberated the camps.




Sig. Stanley Arnold "Rass" Newham .     British Army 12th Signals Coy. Royal Corps Signals   from Cardale Road, Nottingham

Stanley Arnold Newham was my father. He joined up in December 1939 at Nottingham and was assigned to N.Midland District Signals and disembarked in Egypt on the 1st of October 1941. He in the Middle East till 24th November 1943 with 30 Corps then Home till 6th June 1944. He married my Mother Nancy Elizabeth Carlile, on 4th April 1944. He then was in France 'till 12th June 1944. He came home (injured) 'till 9th September 1944 then back in France 'till 13 December 1945. He came home and discharged on 26th April 1946.

He was awarded he Africa Star with 8th Army Clasp, and 1939/45 Star of Italy, Star of France and Germany Star all of which have sadly been lost and no replacements are available any more. He was a Dispatch Rider throughout the war. He was not Discharged from Reserve Liability till 30 June 1959.

Flt.Sgt. Dudley Newlove .     Royal Canadian Air Force 58 Squadron   from Ontario, Canada

(d.20th April 1942)

Flight Sergeant (Pilot) Dudley Newlove was the son of William J. and Olive B. Newlove of Islington, Ontario, Canada. He was 27 when he died and is buried in the Protestant Section of the Bantry Abbey Churchyard, Co. Cork, Ireland.

Sea. Alfred Albert Newman .     Royal Navy HMS Europa

Alfred Newman served on HMS Europa and was discharged to the reserve on 14th December 1945.




Pte Arthur Frederick Newman .     British Army 70th Young Soldier Battalion Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry   from Birmingham

My father, Arthur Newman, enlisted with the 70th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry on the 15th May 1942, in Birmingham. He started his military training at No:16 Infantry Traning Centre, which I believe was at Cowley Barracks in Oxford, in June 1942. After his training he remained with the 70th Bn until his embarkation for India in April 1943.

If anyone has any information about the 70th Battalion OBLI between these dates, then I would love to hear from you

Pte. Bob "Schubert" Newman .     British Army 7th Btn., B Coy. Somerset Light Infantry

My dad, Bob Newman, known as Schubert (he loved classical music) served with the Somerset Light Infantry during WWII, starting in France (D+10), then going through Belgium, Holland and finally being wounded at Geilenkirchen, Germany in November 1944. He is sadly no longer with us, but I would be delighted if anyone out there served with him.




W/O Cecil Newman DFC.     Royal Air Force 50 Sqd.

My Uncle, Cecil Newman, was a rear gunner with 50 and 635 squadrons, he was decorated with the D.F.C. He survived the war but passed away several years ago whilst living in Marsden near South Shields. Any information and further contacts would be gratefully received.

L/Cpl Francis Edgar Newman .     British Army 4th Queens Own Hussars

My father, Francis Edgar Newman, 1905 - 1984 was a POW. Records from the International Red Cross show he was captured by the Germans at Corinthe in 1941. He arrived at Stalag XVIIID on 5th July 1941 having been transported from Saloniki, Greece. He then ended up in Stalag XVIIIA on 25th July 1941 and so far as I know, he was there until 1945.

Harry Newman .     British Army   from County Durham

My great grandad, Harry Newman was captured on Dunkirk. he was taken to Camp Stalag 20a at Thorn, Danzig in Poland. He survived the Death March. He died in 1996 peacefully in his sleep.

Bdr. Noel George F. Newman .     British Army Royal Artillery

George Newman (as he was known) was born on the 27th of Dec 1907. He enlisted in the Royal Sussex Regiment on the 27th of July 1923 and served in Singapore and India being discharged on 20th of Nov 1935. He was recalled to the colours for the duration of the War in the Royal Artillery attaining the rank of Bombardier. George and his wife moved to Australia in 1949.




Reginald Robert "Taffy" Newman .     British Army Military Police   from Wales

My father, Reginald Newman, was on the traffic control section of the military police and a sergeant. He rode a motorbike up the French beaches on D day plus one. His task, with a section of men, was to keep the roads open for the Allied Forces to Germany. He died naturally at the age of 80. After the war he had great difficulty in settling down as he missed his team that he described as 'the lads'.
