World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Corporal Frank Ernest Mayle .     Army III Brigade 2 Signals Regiment / 9 Gurkha Regiment

I am researching the life and times of my late father-in-law. He was sent to Burma in 1943 or 1944 and joined the Chindits. He may have been a Corporal or an NCO with 2 Signals Regiment. He may have been part of the 111 Brigade and 9 Gurkha Regiment commanded by Brigadier J. Morris, landing during March 1944 at Chowringhee. I know of 3 other Corporals who may have been with him at the time: G Ewens, J.E. Kirke and H.M. Jones.

Can anyone help me retrace his steps during those horrible times in Burma fighting a Japanese soldiers who would rather die than surrender ?

JJ Mayle .     British Army

JJ Mayle served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project has lost touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Sgt. Ernest Walter Maylin .     Royal Artillery 365 Battery 92nd Field Regiment   from Kennington, London

Only recently started to look into my grandfather's military career. I have discovered that Ernest Maylin was involved in the defensive action with the BEF throughout the month of May 1940. He was injured and captured 31st May 1940 and after healing was transferred to Stalag VIIIB on 28th Jan 1941. As to what else happened I have no idea, but I would like to eventually find out who he bunked with during his time as a POW.

L/Cpl. Eric Gordon Maynard .     British Army Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment   from Westerham, Kent

Eric Maynard was captured by the Germans at Dunkirk, having been left behind with a small group of men, charged with the task of blowing up bridges. A Panzer division overran his group and they were taken across Europe to a POW camp in Poland, where he spent four years. They were finally liberated from the camp when the German guards abandoned it, caught in the corridor between the Russians advancing from the East and the Americans from the West. Eric made his way on foot across Europe before eventually returning to England, joining the Signals Corp in Yorkshire.

Iris Maynard .     Women's Land Army

Stoker 2nd Cl. Reginald Arthur Maynard .     Royal Navy   from South London

Flt.Sgt. Sidney James Samuel Maynard .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 83 Squadron   from Romford, Essex

(d.1st January 1945)

Flight Sergeant Sidney Maynard was the son of Sidney Maynard, M.M., and Catherine Margaret Ann Maynard, husband of Mary Maynard of Romford. He was 22 when he died and is buried in the Moss Civil Cemetery in Norway.

Wally "Span" Maynard .     British Army 8th Army Royal Army Service Corps

Does anyone know my dad - he was in the RASC and drove tank transporters in North Africa and Italy at Monte Cassino? His co-driver was Bob Lee or Leigh. My dad was Wally Maynard or "Span" (short for spanners). He was, I think, part of the 8th Army.

Pte. Walter George Maynard .     British Army 10th Btn. Parachute Regiment

WO. Alwyn Oswald Thomas Mayne .     Royal Air Force 460 Sqd.

Alwyn Mayne served as an air gunner with 460 Sqd.

PO Thomas H Mayne .     Royal Canadian Air Force 57 Squadron   from Toronto, Ontario, Canada

(d.June 22, 1944)

Pilot Officer Thomas Mayne, the Air Bomber of Lancaster Mk.1, (NN 696) DX - H This plane took off in the first slot, at 2300 hrs. June 21, 1944, from East Kirkby on the Wesseling Oil Refinery raid. This plane was attacked and shot down by a German JU-88 Night Fighter flown by Uffz. Johann Werthner of 7./NJ2, crashing west of Geilenkirchen with the loss of all 7 crew members. One of countless Volunteer Canadian Air Crew that served with the RAF as well as the RCAF in Bomber Command. The War saw truly "Commonwealth" crews.

Sgt. David Alfred William Mayo .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 550 Sqdn. (d.22nd May 1944)

Sgt David Mayo was a member of the crew of Lancaster I LL851 BQV which was shot down south of Antwerp on the Duisburg raid of 21st/22nd May 1944, with all the crew killed. The other members of the crew were:

  • P/O Dukelow, RAFVR

  • Ldg Seaman. Frank Mayo .     Royal Navy HMS Forfar

Ldg Seaman Frank Mayo was one of the surviors of the sinking of HMS Forfar.

PFC. Howard Franklin "Dink" Mayo .     US Army Infantry   from Chetham County, TN

Private First Class Howard F Mayo was my father. He was born in Cheatham County, Tennessee on 9th July 1923 and died in 2008 at his home in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. He served from 20th January 1944 to 2nd December 1945 when he was liberated from Stalag 2 and returned to military control. My father told me that he walked over France and Germany. He went missing in France and was held prisoner for approximately six months at Gustrow, Germany, from 7th November 1944 to 8th May 1945. They were housed 25 men in one room in the camp. They worked in the forest and cut two trees per day. They were served two meals a day which consisted of soup and bread. They received little else and there was no food available. Even the guards were starving. When they received their Red Cross package the German guards ate it and the prisoners did not get them.

They were shipped out the first of the year from the Stalag. When the war was over the Russians came through and murdered men and raped women. The villagers liked the prisoners and treated them well. When they learned the Russians were coming the villagers hid them to prevent the Russians from killing them.

After returning home my father was troubled with stomach problems for years from the lack of food and the way they ate in camp. He weighed 98 pounds when he was released. Unfortunately, the family doesn't have a lot of information regarding his service because the Archives in St. Louis, Missouri no longer have records of Army military personnel for the period of 1912 through 1959. They had a fire in 1973 and many records were destroyed.

P/O. Cecil Graham Mazlin .     Royal Australian Air Force 100 Squadron   from Proserpine, QLD

Capt. Walter Mazzone .     United States Navy   from San Diego, California

Retired Navy Capt. Walter Mazzone, 96, a decorated submarine officer in World War II and later a key figure in the development of deep-sea diving and submarine rescue procedures during the Cold War, died in August 2014 at his home in San Diego.

As a submariner, Capt. Mazzone was involved in two of the war's most harrowing undersea missions. He endured more than 30 hours of depth-charging by Japanese destroyers in the Makassar Strait off Borneo in 1943 after his ship, the Puffer, attacked a Japanese merchant ship. It was considered the longest such assault in submarine history. In 1944, Capt. Mazzone was torpedo and gunnery officer aboard the submarine Crevalle when it was ordered to retrieve secret documents from a Japanese-held island in the Philippines. Along with getting the documents, the sub was charged with rescuing more than 40 women, children, and missionaries who had been hiding from the Japanese. One of the women was pregnant. Capt. Mazzone is credited with taking a goat aboard the submarine to provide milk for the children, including the newborn.

If anyone remembers him or has any photos of the concert I would love to hear from you. The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
