Bmdr. David George Martin .     British Army Royal Artillery   from Theydon Bois, Essex

My late father, George Martin of Theydon Bois, Essex, served with the Royal Artillery in WW2. The attached photo shows him as one of the first prisoners being released from Stalag IV-B. He is centre slightly to the right of the lady sitting at the table. There was another prisoner there from Theydon Bois, Alf Mead. He and my dad gave each other hair cuts. His Prisoner number was 2284835.

Sgt. Eric George Martin .     Royal Air Force 104 Squadron   from London

(d.6th June 1942)

Eric Martin, my Mother's first cousin, was shot down over the Mediterranean and was one of 2 survivors who were picked up. Eric had suffered massive burns and died several days later in Malta hospital. He is buried in the Naval Cemetery on Malta.

Eric had a twin brother named Ron who also served in the RAF. Flight Sgt 84 Squadron, he was was shot down 6 months later and is buried in London.




Sgt. Ernest G. Martin .     Royal Air Force Blenheim 82 Sqn   from Bishops Stortford

(d.30th July 1941)

Ernest Martin was killed on the 30th July 1941 along with P/O J Bell and Sgt J Tague. They never returned from operation Kiel Canal. All are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Gnr. Frank Martin .     Royal Navy HMS Wellesley   from Carlisle

Frank Martin born 1924 served as a gunner on board the HMS Wellesley. We also found references to President, Glendower and Victory and think at least some of these were training to handle the guns used to protect the Merchant ships that we know he was on.




Frederick Martin "Orrie" Martin .     British Army No 3 Commando

My father was captured at Dieppe and spent three years in Stalag 8B. He escaped three times. He was a member of No. 3 Commando. Does anyone remember him?




Wing Cmdr. George "Boss" Martin .     Royal Air Force 608 Squadron

Does anyone have any information about my grandfather, Wing Cmdr George `Boss' Martin who served in 608 Squadron during WWII?




George Edgar Martin .     Royal Canadian Air Force   from Toronto, ON Canada

My father, George Martin spoke of his service in the RCAF, specifically, so fondly of Montrose, Scotland. I wish I knew more about his time overseas. He was a Pilot all his remaining years after the war. During the war, he flew Lancaster Bombers. I would be delighted to hear from others who might know more about Montrose, the RCAF presence there and anything about his squadron. His best friend was Bud Willamson, also a pilot from Toronto ON Canada.




Pte. Gilbert James Martin .     British Army 2nd Btn. Black Watch   from Aberuthven, Perthshire

(d.18th May 1941)

James Gilbert of the 2nd Black Watch died between 18th of May 1941 and 2nd of June 1941. Aged 34 he was the son of Herbert and Maggie Jane Lamb Martin, husband of Grace Margaret Martin of Dundee. He is buried in Suda Bay War Cemetery in Crete.




Major. Glyndwr Martin .     Royal Marines (d.21st January 1943)

Mr Michael posthumously served his country during the Second World War under the assumed rank and name of Major William Martin, Royal Marines, date of death given as 24th April 1943. These details are recorded on the original ledger which marks the grave. History knows him as "The Man Who Never Was". He was 34 and is buried in the Huelva Roman Catholic Cemetery in Spain.
