World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

W. A.M. "Alec" Murrell .     British Army Northumberland Fusiliers

My father served in the Northumberland Fusiliers and was a POW for all the war. He was in Stalag XXB. Like everyone else he never spoke about it. Any information or photos would be welcome.

W/O Gordon "Flash" Murrison .     Royal Air Force 12 Squadron

My brother W/O Gordon (Flash) Murrison served at Wickenby, he was a mid upper gunner with 12 Squadron and completed his tour 30 missions.

Pte. Edward Herrington Mursell .     British Army 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment   from Blackfield, Southampton

Ted Mursell joined the Expeditionary Forces in France in 1939 and was captured at Dunkirk in 1940. Family information records him as being at Malbork in Poland in 1942 at Stalag XX-B, 123. POW No 13639. Sadly no real information passed down, and he died in 1964 at the age of 46. We do know that he somehow befriended a young lady whilst a POW, and correspondence in Polish is to hand, but this ceased in 1947.

M Murtagh .     British Army

M Murtagh served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project are no longer in touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Sgt. Thomas Taylor Murty .     British Army Reconnaisance Corps

Gnr. Will Muscott .     Home Guard 406th Coast-Battery 562nd Coast-Regiment

Harry Frederick Muse .     Britsh Army Royal Artillery   from Saltley, Birmingham

My father, Harry Muse, was a prisoner at Stalag IVB. He was captured at Anzio Beach Head after fighting in North Africa and then shipped out to Italy to help with the Allied advance. I don't know how long he was a prisoner in Stalag IVB but, along with another prisoner from Birmingham - Charlie Thornton - they escaped, only to be recaptured on 1st April by the Gestapo. Both were eventually transferred to a smaller camp Stalag IVF at Annaburg Bucholtz. Towards the end of the War my father escaped again to meet up with the advancing Americans.

For six months after the War my father was in Venice being repatriated and doing what was known as mopping up operations. Unfortunately, my father never talked of fighting, indeed he talked of little about the War from the time he was enlisted in January 1942 until the end of the War in May 1945.

L/Bombr. Harry Frederick Muse .     Britsh Army Royal Artillery   from Saltley, Birmingham

Mt father, Harry Frederick Muse, escaped twice once from Stalag 4B and once from Stalag 4F where upon escaping he met up with the advancing American forces. He went back to help liberate Stalag 4F. Russian soldiers had already hung a number of German guards.

The first time he escaped he was recaptured on the 1st of April by Gestapo and was lucky to survive, it was guards from the camp that came to his rescue. He escaped with others but I only know the name of one and that was Charlie Thornton another Brummie, as my father was a Brummie too.

He was repatriated and sent to Venice for six months in mopping up operations.

He was originally captured at Anzio Beach Head after having fought in North African for 2 years. He never talked about fighting, but told little stories of being a Prisoner of War and was at Stalag 4B when a German Messerschmidt Buzzed over the camp, but it couldn't pull out of the dive and crashed the plane, he said the whole camp cheered and laughed at that.

Flt.Sgt. Elmer Bagnall Muttart .     Royal Canadian Air Force 76 Squadron   from Cape Traverse, Prince Edward Island, Canada

(d.13th Oct 1941)

I live presently on Prince Edward Island and am a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 10 in Borden Carleton. I am doing research on the names mentioned on The Cenotaph in front of The Legion.

After publishing an article on my research, I was contacted by a relative of Mr Muttart and he showed me an email with the folowing text: It was posted in 2011 as a comment on the Flicker Photo Website: "About 5 years ago an English gentleman and his daughter came and stayed at our Bed and Breakfast "Het Kapileinshuis" in Harlingen (located in The province of Friesland in The Netherlands). His name was (Flight Sergeant) Alexander, and he was the navigator on the plane piloted by Mr Muttart. They were shot down by a German nightfighter - returning from a bombing mission to Bremen - over Harlingen on 13th of October 1941.The whole crew could bale out because the pilot stayed with the plane until the last moment, thus also avoiding crashing into the village of Wons killing many innocent people. The pilot iust cleared the farm of the family Politiek on the outskirts of the village. We took Mr Alexander to the Harlingen Cemetery to pay his respects, an emotional moment for him as he had wondered all his life where his pilot had been buried. According to the many people around Pingjum (where Mr Alexander landed by chute) and Wons, it was an heroic act by the pilot that saved his crew and the citizens of the village."

The crew members on the Halifax L9561 MP-H were in alphabetical order:

  • Alexander, Reg William Purchase, Sergeant, service no: 748073
  • Cotsell, D, Sergeant, service no: 567496
  • Duffield, J.W., Sergeant, service no: 923202
  • Hunt, W.H., Sergeant, service no: 910914
  • Muttart, Elmer Bagnell, Flight Sergeant, service no: R/64729 (he was the 1st pilot on this flight)
  • Patterson, G.H., Sergeant, service no: 943602
  • Roberts, L.A., Sergeant, service no: 565746
  • Trayler, N.F., Pilot officer, service no: 101563 (Mr. Tryler was the 2nd pilot on this flight)

Mr Muttart was Killed. The other crew members landed safely, but were captured by the Germans and were sent to Germany as prisoners of war. Mr. Muttart was a member of the RCAF, the other crew members were in the RAF. I would like to come in touch with family members of the crew.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
