Gnr. Norman "Bishop" Jenner .     British Army Royal Artillery

Norman Jenner on left

My father-in-law, Norman Jenner (Gunner 888206 in the Royal Artillery), was captured at Dunkirk and spent the rest of the War in Stalag 8b (Stalag 344) near Lamsdorf. Like everyone, he had a pretty rough time there and would never talk about it, so unfortunately I don't have many memories to share. What I do recall from many conversations during which he shared little was that his nickname was "the Bishop" - maybe because he was a committed Christian and/or he was well spoken and older than most of his fellow inmates, being born in 1910. He also said they often had sugar beet to eat, which was not a balanced diet, but filling. He also said that although the Brits had a hard time, it was nothing compared to the Jews, Gypsies and Slavs who were treated as subhuman.

He suffered from malnutrition during his stay in Stalag 8B and this brought on blindness which he suffered from the mid-fifties until his death in 1993. I have two photos of Norman with some of his POW friends taken soon after the War. I would love to know who they are and to make contact if possible. I also have a photo of Norman's nephew which must have been sent to him at the camp as it is stamped "Stalag VIIIB geprüft Nr 35".

Pte. Richard Fredrick Jenner .     British Army Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment   from Dorking, Surrey

Dick Jenner standing.

Dick Jenner was evacuated from Dunkirk.

Gnr. Albert "Ginger" Jennings .     British Army 81st Field Regiment Royal Artillery   from Aberdeen

Albert Albert joined the 7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1940 as a Territorial for the duration of the War. In February 1942 he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Highland Regiment and nine months later transferred to the Royal Artillery, from 1945 until 1948 he served with the Royal Military Police.

Albert re-joined the Army in 1949 and served in Egypt and Germany. In 1958 he transferred to the Royal Army Pay Corps, serving in Herford and Verden in Germany, Household Cavalry in London and finally in the Command Pay Office in Singapore. Albert returned to Aldershot in 1967 and died in the Cambridge Military Hospital in 1968.

Pte. Albert Jennings .     British Army Leicestershire Regiment   from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire

This information is all I have of my grandfather Albert Jennings's service. I do know he was a miner at Sherwood Colliery, Mansfield before the 2nd World War. I also heard he did some training at Chilwell Barracks, Nottinghamshire. He also served on the Channel Islands, and spent some time in Ireland with his mate Tommy (sorry, no last name). From what I'm told, he started out as an officer's batman, was a cook in the Army, and was involved with physical training. I do know that he boxed for his Regiment, from what I recall, he fought at bantam-weight.

Audrey Mary Jennings .     Auxiliary Territorial Service

Pte. Charles Jennings .     British Army Queen Royal Regiment   from 40 Loeless Road, Lea Hall, Birmingham

In my late father's posesions I found details of his elder brother Charles Jennings 's internment in a POW camp. I don't know if he made it out of there. Does anyone remember the name? He was a Brummie and very young.

Douglas Alan Jennings .     Royal Air Force 57 Squadron   from Pinner

My uncle, Dougls Jennings, joined the RAF in November 1941. After training as a bomb aimer he joined 57 Squadron in 1943 flying in Wellingtons. His crew was.

  • Sgt. Guilyn (Ginger) Guy - Pilot
  • F.O. Victor Spalding - Navigator
  • Sgt, Grenville (Lofty) Hyde - Wireless Operator
  • Sgt. Eric (Taffy) Raffels - Rear Gunner
  • Ft Lt Douglas Jennings - Bomb Aimer

Later they converted to 4 engine Sterlings and then Lancasters. This required 2 extra crew

  • Joe Hatter - Flight engineer
  • Alan (Al) Applegarth - Mid-upper Gunner

On or about their 18th operation on the 21st June 1944 they were shot down over Belgium. Ginger saved his crew by remaining at the controls whilst the others bailed out, but didn't make it himself and was killed. My uncle met up with the Belgium resistance and was hidden by them until they were liberated.

On return to England, he joined 9 Squadron which flew similar raids to the more famous 617, dropping 12,000lb Tallboys. After the war he returned to civilian life and lives today on the South Coast. In 2005 he published a book "Jump or Die" chronicling his experiences.

Ethel Veronica Jennings .     Womens Land Army   from South Tyneside

My mother, Ethel Jennings, was in the land army working with dairy cattle, possibly post ww2. She was possibly posted in Hertfordshire and Tyneside or Durham.

Gnr. Frank William Jennings .     British Army 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery   from Cardiff

Frank Jennings joined the British Army before the outbreak of WW2. He served with the Royal Horse Artillery, I believe, in the 1st Regiment.

He was posted to France and evacuated at the Battle of Dunkirk. He was then posted to the Middle East and was blown up whilst operating a 25 pounder field gun at the battle of Sidi Rezegh, I believe. He survived although sustaining wounds that meant he was repatriated and demobbed. He loved the Army although he spoke very litle of his experiences, I believe they scarred him physically and mentally. He was my dad.

GF Jennings served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

James William Jennings .     Fleet Air Arm HMS Medina   from Stotfold, Bedfordshire

My father, James William Jennings, was drafted into the Fleet Air Arm when joining up in 1941 and served as an Air mechanic. He served on ships such as the Medina, Daedalus, Kestrel, Candor, Victory, Merlin and Nighthawk (the ship he was on when he was discharged. Most of the war he spent in South Africa. I am hoping to find out more about his shipmates and people he served with during the war. I know he was in the Royal Naval Air Squad hockey team. But apart from that I don't know much. Sadly he died in 1975, long before I could be interested in his war time experiences.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
