World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

John Haylock .     Navy SS Anslem

My father, John Haylock, was on the SS Anslem when it was torpedoed and sunk. He was one of those trying to 'persuade' the Revd Pugh not to go back down into the hold. Dad was overcome with emotion when he saw the pictures and was reading from this site. He always thought this episode had been thoroughly 'swept under the carpet'.

My grandfather, George Haynes, was killed in the Battle for Singapore on 26th January 1942, a day after my grandmother's 25th birthday (who only last week celebrated her 101st birthday). Like many others my Grandmother was left with my father who was 10 months old at the time. She only knew that George was missing, and didn't know he had been killed until a prisoner of war, came home to tell her that he had seen George shot dead, this person had tried to get to George to take his watch and personal belongings in the hope of returning them to my Grandmother. Sadly he was taken prisoner before he had time.

Ted Haynes .     British Army 2nd Btn. Royal Fusiliers

Wilfred Haynes .     Royal Navy HMS Byrsa   from Redditch

I am researching my father, Wilfred Haynes. Dad was probably better known as Bill. Prior to joining up he was a P&TO in Redditch, Worcestershire. Dad was born in 1920 in Levenshume, Manchester. He never spoke about the war in any form and now it's too late to ask him as Dad passed away. In the photograph Bill is 1 row from the back, 2nd signalman on the left.

His service included postings at: HMS Byrsa (Naples) and HMS Euroclydon (Malta) from 1942. After the war he married and moved to Bridge Farm Beoley, one of several residences. I'd be very grateful for any information.

Pte. Edward Glynn "Tommy" Haynes-Thomas .     British Army Royal Army Medical Corps

RSM Peter Haysmith .     British Army Royal Military Police   from Clacton on Sea

Pte. Charles Edwood Haythorne .     British Army King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry   from Denaby

My great grandfather, Charles Edwood Haythorne, otherwise known as Ted, served in the K.O.Y.L.I Regiment. He was part of the British Expeditionary Force which was captured at Ypres where he was part of the rear guard for Dunkirk.

I have found a photograph on this site of prisoners in Stalag XXB, which one of them, I believe, is my great grandfather. From my relatives I believe he was taken from Stalag XXB and put to work in a labour camp. He informed the Germans he was a farmhand instead of telling them the truth, that he was a miner because he would have been put in the mines, which he knew would have led to his death in a matter of months, weeks or even days.

I know some time in the early 1980’s he was offered a medal for his services at Dunkirk which he refused to send for as he said quote “If its took all these years to say I deserved a medal for what I did, I don’t want it.” My great grandfather didn’t agree with the length of time that it took the British Government to decide that all those that suffered, served and many that gave their lives in protecting Dunkirk needed a medal. Which could have, quite rightly, been issued many years before. He thought it was a disgrace how many of those who served had passed away after the war with no recognition for what they did.

If anyone can help me in finding out information on my great grandfather and how to retrieve his service medals (and Dunkirk medal) please can you email me with any information at all; it would be really appreciated.

Charles Edward Haythorne .     British Army Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry

My father, Charles Edward Haythorne (known as Teddy) was captured at Dunkirk and was taken to the POW camp Stalag XXb. If anyone can tell me anything about him please get in touch.

My dad Douglas Hayton was in the Queens Bays (2nd Dragoons) Tank Regiment in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, and prior to that in France as a despatch rider. He trained at Bovington before being shipped out on the six week trip to South Africa and was transported up to North Africa for the desert war. He was a tank commander and talked little about his wartime experiences. He was blown from a blazing tank and survived, but his crew did not. He had many nightmares about this after the war.

My uncle, George Taylor, served with the Roal Artillery in WWII. He later became an MP.

Sgt. John William Hayton .     Royal Air Force Air Gunner 100 Squadron   from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
