World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Lewis Terry Hatcher .     United States Air Force 15th Air Force   from West Chester, PA

Terry Hatcher enlisted in November 1942 and trained as a B-17 pilot. He served with the 15th Air force, at one point from a base in Foggia, Italy. He and his fellow airmen completed 24 bombing missions over Germany, Austria, Poland, Yugoslavia and Italy. but it was the 19th mission, on March 16, 1945, in which he bombed the Schwechat oil refinery in Austria, that he called his "longest day".

The plane took off early that morning with a 6,000-pound payload. It rendez-voused over the Adriatic Sea with hundreds of other planes. The B-17 dropped its bombs on the target and was turning to head back to base when two of the four engines quit, hit by enemy fire. Flak had stripped through the right wing and parts of the instrument panel - and oil and gas streamed out, washing into the rear gunner's position," Mr. Hatcher told a veterans' group on 7th Feb. 1991. "The Decision was made not to bail out, but to make a go for it, out of enemy territory. Shortly afterward, a third engine quit, and the plane started losing altitude at the rate of 1,500 feet a minute. Notwithstanding all of this, the Hungarian border was reached, and a belly landing ensued on a hilly piece of farmland. Miraculously, the entire crew got out without injury. Local farm folk appeared, including one old farmer, who stepped out of the crowd flourishing a bottle of vodka and shouting, 'Do you want a drink, comrade?' The answer, 'Why not?'"

The airmen were handed over to the Russians, who in turn led them to safety with American combat troops. Mr. Hatcher told the Military Order of the World Wars. The story was chronicled by Ken Burns in his documentary "The War".

Gnr. Thomas Henry Hatchett .     British Army 15th Btn. Durham Light Infantry (d.16th Dec 1944)

On 16th of December 1944, the Rex Cinema in Antwerp, which was packed full of people, was the subject of a direct hit by a V2 rocket, which killed some 290 Allied personnel, together with many Belgium civilians. One of these people was my grandmother's cousin, Harry Hatchett, of the Royal Durham Light Infantry. Is there anybody out there who has any more information about this incident or could perhaps help with recollections?

Update: Ten minutes before the rocket fell I was one of four friends who had stopped outside the cinema wondering whether to go in. I remember it was showing a Gary Cooper western which I had not seen. One of our party went in. For some unknown reason I decided to go to a cinema across the street showing a film of which I have no memory. The other two walked on. I had barely sat down when there was an explosion and the roof fell in. I staggered out to see a scene of devastation across the road. There was nothing I could do that was not being being done so I walked away. I never saw my friend again.

Sgt. John William Roan Hatfield .     British Army   from Shrewsbury

This is my dad Jack Hatfield's story as far as I know. He never told us what happened. This was told to us by my mother. He was in an armoured car in France with two army colleagues. The driver sitting at the front and the soldier making the maps sat in the middle facing forwards and dad was in the back doing the radio operating. The armoured car was bombed. Whether it was friendly fire or not we don't know because there were no identification marks on the vehicle. The driver was killed instantly because the main source of the blast was at the front of the vehicle. The soldier sitting in the middle had both his legs severely damaged above the knee and Dad had his jaw bone and facial area badly injured.

Dad managed to get the injured soldier out of the vehicle and dragged him to a small cave where he covered him with his greatcoat. The injured soldier was dead next morning through blood loss and Dad was in a poor shape. He was picked up and taken to a German field hospital. However, because they were making maps the British Infantry were not far behind them and they took over the hospital and sent the injured British soldiers home. That's as much as I know.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
