Gnr. Raymond Nicholson "Yorkie" Hampshire . British Army 23rd Field Regiment, 60th Battery Royal Artillery from Barnsley,Yorkshire
Raymond Hampshire, my father, left Britain for North Africa on December 26th, 1942 sailing from Glasgow. He served with the First Army, in the 23rd Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. His first major participation in battle after landing in North Africa was at Thala and Kasserine Pass (Feb 18th - Feb 23rd). On March 17th he reported that the weather was very wet and cold. Sunday 4th April the unit was attacked by 50 Stuka dive bombers. Tuesday April 6th 90/100 battery Major was awarded the MC in recognition of the battery's gallantry at Kasserine Pass.
Thursday April 23rd, Battle for Tunis - zero hr 22.00hrs 130 guns opened on Longstop Hill, and the RAF bombed every hour for 48hrs. On Friday 60 Battery took the Hill at 14.00 hrs. The Infantry found only 70 living Germans when they took the Hill, all others were dead. On Saturday 24th April they lost part of the Hill but re-took it on Sunday 25th. Battle raged on 28th, 29th and 30th when strong enemy attack was repelled. Battle continued and on May 5th the battery advanced, 700 guns were used in the attack, and battle raged for 20hrs. May 12th Germans abandoned their posts. 19th May, saw a victory march through Tunis.
On September 27th they boarded a US Navy landing craft and left for an unknown destination: eventually they landed at Amalfi. The weather was very wet and very cold. On October 13th there was a 'big push', with 392 guns in action and 300 German dead. The regiment moved up to between Naples and Rome, and were attacked by thousands of mosquitoes! The eventual destination was Monte Cassino and the great battle there. Father lived to tell the tale, but it was a story of horror and death on all sides.
He returned to the family in December 1945 and lived to the age of 77. He was a wonderful father and husband.

Sgt. D. E.J. Hampson . 102 Squadron
F/Sgt. Geoffrey Samuel Hampson . Royal Air Force 227 Squadron from Manchester
Geoff Hampson was a flight engineer on Lancasters. I have one of my father's flying log books which shows his flying time while based at Balderton, he had previously been based in Quetta, Ceylon, Kandy and Egypt. I think he must have trained in Cardiff because that's where he met my mother. They were married in July 1944. I don't really have much more information but would be interested to find out more.

My Mother, Rita Janet Bartlett of Smethwick Birmingham, got married to Royston Percy Hamson in 1943. They were both 21 years old. He according to Mom used to fly Halifax bombers, I believe from Goule near Hull but I could be wrong. Mom got married to my dad Bernard Stanley Stanton in 1950 and had seven children, although she always loved her flight pilot predominantly.
I am trying to find out any information I can about Royston, who, having died so young, should be remembered. How did he die? What bombing raid did he participate in? What was his final mission? Any medals? Do you have any of Royston's family contacts? Please supply any info you may have.
Sydney Hampson . British Army from Walton, Liverpool
My granddad, on my father's side, Syd Hampson fought in North Africa during WW2, a Desert Rat, against Rommell. He was a hard fighter behind the tanks as they went forward. He was promoted to NCO because he was a good soldier, especially with the sten gun, a machine gun fired from the hip, so I am led to believe. His name was Sydney Hampson, married to Edith, from Liverpool, Walton area. Fit A1 health. My dad, Syd, often talks about him, he was in the 8th Army, I think. He led the Battle of El Alamein againt Rommel, for Montgomery. He died in 1982

Bernard John Stanton Hamshire . British Army Royal Signals from Rye, East Sussex
My late father Jack Hamshire, was reported missing on 28th April 1941, following action at Kalamata, Greece. He was transported from Greece in open cattle rail-trucks and held prisoner at Stalag XVIIID, and for a short time at Stalag XVIIIA. During his internment he was assigned to a work camp on local farms. Both camps were liberated in 1945. I have his prisoner dog-tags showing PoW No: 4208 and a picture of him at a workcamp, believed to be Workcamp 487L. My father is the chap on the extreme right in the photo.
Cpl. Albert Hamson . British Army
We recently discovered some postcards from WW2 POW Camp 383 in Germany. They are dated in 1943 and 1944 and were written by Corporal Albert Hamson to my father-in-law Don Toon who lived near Burton on Trent. From the wording, Albert used to work with Don on the railways in England before being called up. In the camp there were at least two other ex-Railwaymen, Ray Chadwick and Les Pickering. From the messages, Albert's wife was called Frances and Don and his wife used to write to her. We never saw Albert but remember that he was called Happy.
Stanley "Ginger" Hamson . Auxiliary Fire Service & National Fire Service from Hull
Stanley "Ginger" Hamson . Auxiliary Fire Service Hull Central Fire Station from Hull
My father Stanley Hamson, also know as Ginger (because of his hair colour) was stationed at the Central Fire Station, he was born in Hull 27th May 1917, and joined the A.F.S. at the beginning of the war and was transferred to the N.F.S. I can remember my father returning home, after many air raids in Hull, during the war we lived in Florence Avenue, Kimberley Street, Hull. I can remember the Fire Service, celebrating Christmas time at the Central Station, inviting their families. My father left after the War, but I have not been able to get hold of any information on his service records as I have been told that these were destroyed by fire.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
