F/Sgt. Reginald Edward Gallagher .     Royal Australian Air Force 142 Squadron   from Sea Lake, Vic. Australia

Robert Gallagher .     British Army 1st King's Dragoon Guards   from Birtley

The only thing I have of my grandfather, Robert Gallagher's, military service is this photo of him with his unit. On the back of the photo is written: "1st King's Dragoon Guards, Nov 22 1940." He is 2nd row, 3rd from right.

I do not know his service number or rank. His medals were lost after he passed. All I know for sure is he served in North Africa and survived the war. He passed in November 1972. I am posting this hoping that some of these brave soldiers are still with us and also that others might find their relative in this photo.

Pte. Terrance Gallagher .     British Army 4th Btn. Welsh Regiment   from Middlesbrough, Yorkshire

(d.25th Feb 1945)

My grandfather is still alive and was a Royal Marine paratrooper dring WW2. Whilst trying to find out more about his service, I discovered that he had a younger brother who was killed aged 18 on the Belgium/German border. It was the first time I had even heard about him and was therefore trying to speak to anybody who may have known him and the circumstances surrounding the final days of his life. If there is, I would love to hear about it.

Pte. Thomas Gallagher .     British Army 2/6th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regt   from Harrogate, N Yorkshire

My father, Tommy joined up in 1940 at the age of 21. He saw service in France and later in Burma where he fought for just under 4 years. He was lucky enough to come home alive and went on to marry my mother and father 7 children. He died in 1986 aged 64. RIP. He told us that he sailed from Blackpool, Lancs (where he met my mother in the Tower Ballroom! - he was a great dancer). Apparently he had his army shoes on and couldn't ask her to dance in those, so he asked a chap who looked as if he had the same size shoes on to lend him his and the rest is history). He didn't like donkeys for some reason so he had a bullock, which he called Basil, instead. Unfortunately, it ended up being eaten when they were short of rations.

Sgt. William Gallagher .     British Army

Sapper Art Gallant .     Royal Canadian Army Royal Canadian Engineers

My father, Art Gallant, fought in WWII and was a sapper in the Royal Canadian Army, possibly with the Royal Canadian Engineers. When he married my mum he was stationed at Haymill (Hayhill?) Army Camp, Slough. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers my dad or the camp.

Cpl. Charles Henry Francis "Carl" Galliers .     British Army 14th Reserve MT Coy, C Section Royal Army Service Corps

My paternal grandfather Corporal Charles Henry Francis Galliers, RASC "C" section, 14th reserve MT coy, middle east forces in 1941 was in the POW Camp PG78 in Italy after 1942 (not sure of dates) and then stalag IVB during spring 1944 (I have a letter sent home with april 1944 on it). He died 3 years ago, the only memories he told were of being starving hungry in the Italian camp and chewing boot leather to stave off hunger and when a donkey was brought into camp pulling a cart it didn't live to leave! He was treated better by the Germans. I have some photos with a couple of other POWs names on the back - Geoff Galloway and George Frick (?can't read the writing properly looks like Frick) - also some photos of my grandad working on building a war memorial and on the back it reads "newborderf am elbe, (again not sure of spelling) prisoners of war cemetary, taken 7th may 1944". There is also a photo of a german guard - his name on the back " ? officer Siebel". Anyone who has any info about my grandad, his platoon, the camps he was in I would be interested to hear from them. I will send scans of the photos I have later when I have mastered the technology!

Stvd3. Sidney Gallon .     British Army 1046th Port Operating Company Royal Engineers   from Reading

Father, Sidney Gallon was a Royal Engineer with 1026th Port Operating Company. His Company was part of 21st Army Group (Monty's Army Group) for 1944 and 1945. Father came ashore just behind 47 (Royal Marine) Commando who took the only working port captured during this phase of the invasion. They achieved this on D Day + 1. The place was Port En Bessin. They'd landed on Gold Beach and marched around the headland. Port En Bessin was used to land the first fuel pipelines taken from ships moored offshore before PLUTO (Pipe-Lines Under the Ocean) became operational. Port En Bessin remained the only port captured for some months.

Capt. Andrew Galloway .     British Army 2nd Btn. Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)   from Ayr

Andrew Galloway was born in Girvan in the West of Scotland in 1901 died in 1999 aged 98. One of 10 children, one of his brothers died of tuberculosis at the age of 6. He Left school at 12 and was indentured by his father to a local farmer for the grand sum of £50 in 1913.

Andrew joined 2nd Battalion, Cameronians Scottish Rifles in 1918 as a Piper. He served in Ireland and Northern India, Iraq and Afghanistan during the 1920's and 30's. He had stories to tell about leading the battalion on the march through the Khyber Pass and being shot at constantly and lots of small skirmishes but rarely even having sight of the attackers. He left the army in 30's at which point he was the Pipe Major of the battalion.

He was re-enlisted as a Captain at the beginning of 2nd World War back into 2nd Cameronians where they were part of The British Expeditionary Force sent to France to fight the Germans. His major military action was at the Battle of The Ypres-Comis Canal, 26th to 28th of May 1940. The 2nd Cameronians were in the vanguard of an attack by The British 5th Division in a do or die attempt to hold the German troops at bay to allow the main body of the BEF to retreat back to Dunkirk. They succeeded in doing this for 3 days which was critical in allowing the main British fighting to escape the German blitzkrieg. Most of his friends and comrades many of whom he served with for many years in the Cameronians were killed. A part of his life he never spoke about.

He worked as a green keeper at Belleisle Golf Course in Ayr after his military service and was a keen golfer and a very modest, kind, stable and very well respected member of his local community in Ayr where he continued to serve as a Major in the Territorial Army after leaving the Regular Army.

Spr. John Galloway .     British Army Royal Engineers

My father served as a Sapper in the North African Campaign before being shipped over to Greece in 1941, where he was captured, I think in the Bay of Corinth, by the Germans on 29 April 1941. I know that he was imprisoned firstly in Stalag 4B (Mûhlberg) and at a later date transferred to Stalag 4C (Wistritz), but have no idea, record or means of finding out when.

My father died, aged 83, in 1998. He spent his working life as a bricklayer, but it was his recollection of his wartime experiences and his command of German which led to my studying the language and engaging in Twinning activities between my county in Scotland (East Lothian) and its twin county in Germany (Spree-Neisse), which is situated only 2 hours by train from Mûhlberg.

I have visited Mûhlberg on 2 occasions, most recently only 2 weeks ago with a group of students. Frau Stamm gave us an illuminating guided tour on both occasions.

Gnr. Terence Galloway .     Royal Navy HMS Campania

My father Terrance Galloway served on HMS Campania as a gunner I guess during 1944/45. Getting any information out of him was difficult to impossible, he just would not talk about this time. But in his 70's he opened up just the once and described the Arctic convoys. The cold was the worst thing. As I said he was a rear gunner, and after his four hour shift he needed to be lifted out of his seat, as his clothes had frozen solid around him. It would then take the rest of the night to warm up. The other anecdote was watching a torpedo coming straight at the ship, frozen solid he couldn't move, thirty yards out the torpedo sank, they were just out of range! And that is it, my only knowledge of his war exploits.

F/Sgt. Thomas Frank Galloway .     Royal Air Force 99 Squadron

My Father Thomas Galloway served in 99 Squadron during WW2 ending up in the Cocos Islands and originally training in Canada for the RAF as a wireless operator. I still have his log books as well as photographs taken from the Liberator as well as his silk map and flag which contains message, we are friendly.

VD Galloway .     British Army

VD Galloway served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Jean Galt .     Land Army

RA Galtress .     British Army Reconnaissance Corps

BG Gambie served with the 17/21st Lancers British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Able Sea Harold Alfred Gambie .     Royal Navy   from Camberley, Surrey

Gene Gambill .     US Navy USS Boise

My father Gene Gambill was a Pharmacist Mate aboard USS Boise, CL 47 from 1941 until near the end of the war. I read your information regarding the ship and enjoyed it very much. One detail you could include is the fact that Boise had General McArthur aboard for his return to the Philippines. My dad spoke to him while he was aboard and I have a Navy photo that I obtained from a commercial service showing McArthur receiving a formal welcome aboard

I would enjoy reading more stories about Boise or hearing from shipmates or their relatives.

Sergeant "Tubby" Gamble .     RAAF 59 Squadron

Alec William Henderson Gamble .     Royal Air Force 78 Sqdn.

My grandfather, Alec Gamble, was in 78th squadron. He spoke quite a bit about some parts of the war but kept rather quiet about others. It would be lovely to hear more from anyone who knew him or the relatives of people who remember him. I'd love to know more.

He was shot down in a Halifax 2 on 31st May 1942. He was a rear gunner and was unable to bail out, so went down with the plane. I recognise some of the names listed from his stories. Other names I can't recall but still have the stories stuck in my head. He had the squadron photo on his bedroom wall, I shall have to see if I can borrow and scan it to share.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
