Pte. Charles Russell Gibson .     British Army Highland Light Infantry

My father was Charles Gibson and he was a Private in The Highland Light Infantry, British Army. He was captured in Lybia and sent to Campo 78, Fonte d'Amore, near Sulmona.

After the Italians capitulated, he left the camp with another soldier. They were helped by an Italian family (a single mother, two sons and a daughter) and looked after by them for three months. I only found out about this after my father died in 1988 when we found a letter from the Italian family written in August 1946 and addressed to my mother. They did not know what had happened to him and wondered if he had got home safely.

I know that he was recaptured by the Germans and sent to a camp at Moosburg, near Munich. With the great help of the Tourist Office in Sulmona I managed to get in touch with the family, who had emigrated to Canada in 1946. Unfortunately, the son who had written the letter had passed away, but I was able to speak to the daughter by telephone,

Messgr. D. S. Gibson .     Civil Defence Horsham Auxiliary Fire Service

Pte. Derrick Paul Gibson .     British Army 4th Btn. Dorset Regiment

My dad, Derrick Gibson was called up for active service in 1944 on his 18th birthday. He did his training in Norfolk then was shipped over to Holland where he joined the 4th Dorsets. After the war finished he then completed his service by going to Palestine via Italy. I am in the process of looking into his war records with little success. I would also like to know how he got to Holland, I guess it was by ship and would like to know more details about his journey. I will carry on looking for more information

Sgt. Douglas Bridgford Gibson DFM..     Royal Air Force 106 Squadron

Douglas Gibson was my uncle. I know very little about him other than I believe he enlisted in RAF Bomber Command, 106 Squadron shortly before war broke out. I found an entry in The Gazette dated 18th September 1942 awarding him a DFM and I also think he received a DSO but have not found proof yet.

Sgt D B Gibson was a radio op/rear gunner, later becoming a Pathfinder. Towards the end of war and because he had survived so many sorties, he was posted to a training unit in Canada as an instructor. His second wife Grace Walker was secretary of the Pathfinder Club in London during and after the war. Douglas and Grace died some time in the eighties I believe.

Ord Sea Edward Gibson .     Royal Navy HMS Prometheus   from Middlesbrough

My father Edward Gibson served on HMS Prometheus from 14th of October 1943 until 31st of Marxh 1944 and again in January 1945 and May/June 1945.

F/O. Eric William "Hoot" Gibson DFC..     Royal Air Force 115 Squadron   from Yallourn, Australia

My father initially joined the Australian Army in 1940, but decided he wanted to fly to war instead of walking, so joined the RAAF in early 1941. His initial training was in Tasmania and then advanced training in Canada. He was then posted to 623 Sqn at Downham Market where he only completed 2 gardening sorties on Stirlings before it was disbanded.

He was then transferred to 115 Squadron at Witchford where he completed his tour of 30 operations in June 1944. His log book records at least two attacks by enemy night fighters and another is confirmed by gunners reports.

At the end of his tour, he was posted to several training units as a flying instructor and managed to survive them as well. He was awarded the DFC in 1944. Whilst he didn't speak much about the war on his return or in later years, he did comment about two particular raids to Nuremberg and Leipzig which were particularly costly to Bomber Command. He also mentioned another occasion where he was forced to land at Downham Market as there was an enemy fighter in the circuit at Witchford. This fighter was responsible for the destruction of two of 115 Squadron's returning aircraft.

The only other trip he mentioned was one where, on their return to base, they found an incendiary bomb lodged in the engine housing of the Lancaster, obviously dropped from an aircraft above. Luckily, it hadn't ignited. I still have the nose weight from that bomb with the date 1943 cast into it. The bomb had been defused by armourers and the nose weight given to Dad's Canadian tail gunner who surprised Dad with it when my parents visited him in Canada.

Dad returned to Australia in 1945 where he was a power station control room supervisor until retirement. He died in 1999 at the age of 83 years of age. He never flew an aircraft again on his return to Australia but retained a keen interest in aviation. I recall him saying that when he was a young lad, he had seen Charles Kingsford Smith's aircraft in western Victoria when it was doing joy rides to help finance his exploits.

Gnr. Frank Edward Gibson .     British Army 1st Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery   from London

(d.26th Jul 1944)

Frank Gibson was my uncle. He landed in France in early July 1944 and fought alongside the Canadians. He died near Caen on 26th of July 1944 and is now buried at Ryes War Graves Cemetery.

G R Gibson .     British Army West Yorkshire Regiment

G Gibson served with the West Yorkshire Regiment British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

(d.22nd March 1943)

Flight Sergeant Gibson was the Son of Alexander and Margaret Gibson of Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. He was aged 23 when his Catalina aircraft crashed off Sagres. He is buried in the Sagres Cemetery in Portugal.

Wg. Cdr. Guy Penrose Gibson VC, DSO, DFC.     Royal Air Force 627th Sqd.   from Cornwall

(d.19th Sept 1944)

109 Squadron is showing a Mosquito loss in 1944. In 1943 109 Sqn was merged to 627 Sqn. The loss of the Mosquito in 1944 you have is incorrect. The Mosquito loss in 1944 is one of the most famous and was September 18/19 1944. The Pilot Wing Commander Guy Gibson DFC DSO his navigator was Sqn Ldr Jim Warwick. They were on an operation as Pathfinder and Gibson was MASTER BOMBER when they crashed on the way home in Holland at Steenbergen where there is a memorial at the crash site and in a local park.

Sgt. Howard P. Gibson .     British Army Reconnaissance Corps   from Sydney

I don't know too much about my grandfather, Howard Gibson's service in WW2 except from tales from my father Colin. When growing up I had fond memories of my grandfather but he rarely talked about his experience in the war and his time at Stalag IVB.

We know from the Ministry of Defence that Howard was in the Reconnaissance Corps and served in North Africa. He was the commander of a tank that was ambushed by the Germans and during this ambush one of the soldiers was killed instantly and another soldier was shot and killed by the Germans after trying to flee. Howard was the sole survivor from this attack and was then brought to POW camps in Italy and then later to Stalag IVB (POW number: 226644). It is rumoured that when captured he was inspected by Erwin Rommel, as he was keen to inspect captured soldiers to see what kind of condition they were in i.e. if they were low on food and ammunition etc. although I can't verify the authenticity of this part.

Howard then married Jean and came to Sydney, Australia where they started a family. Howard was very skilled with his hands and started a successful plastics factory called Warringah Plastics which is still in operation today.

Howard was born on 23rd September 1920 and sadly passed away in 2008. This text is a tribute to Howard Gibson and his legacy and to the other brave soldiers who managed to survive and start a new life in a foreign land despite all they had gone through.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
