PFC. Leopold Vincent Fischer . United States Army from Louisiana
My uncle Leopold Vincent Fischer was a prisoner of war in Stalag 4A Hohnstein (Airfield at Dresden-Klotsche). I was told that he got sick and was put on a train with the dying and a German nurse saved his life. I really don't know much more than this. My grandmother was sent a letter that he was missing in action in 1944.
Cpl. Martin W. Fischer . United States Army 70th Tank Battalion from Des Moines, Iowa
My late grandfather, Martin Fischer, was at Stalag 4B. He was the third tank off the boat and the first tank to hit Normandy Beach. He told me on D-Day, they drove around for about eight hours then took a break in St. Mere Eglise. Their tank was hit there and set afire. They were captured. They walked for two to three months to get to the camp. He fell once and the only thing that saved his life was the fact his last name was the German spelling of Fischer.
I am trying to find out a lot of information. Was he hurt at all, how did he deal, etc? If you know him, please contact me. I am his only grandchild, his daughter, my mother was an only child too, but she has passed on. Thank you.

Alf Fishburn . Royal Air Force 57 Sqd.
Alf Fishburn . Royal Air Force 57 Squadron
My grandfather Alf Fishburn served as a Wireless Operator with 57 Squadron. He was an amazing person who took chances and opportunities throughout his life, a real entrepreneur and lived life.
Sig. Cecil Leon Fishel . British Army Eighth Army Royal Signals from Liverpool
My father, Cecil Fishel said he was captured in late June at El Alemain but I wonder if it was one of the minor battles just before this as he said he was captured on or around his 22nd birthday, which was the 18th of June 1942. I reckon he was then shipped to Italy as I've found he was at Camp 57 then onwards to a Stalag in Austria, not far from Graz then it seems he was prisoner of war on some Austrian farm somewhere (for around 18 months).
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. He told one or two stories but they are rather gruesome. It seems he had a terribly difficult war and didn't tend to talk about it

Dorothy "Dolly" Fisher . from Ashtead
My mother, Dorothy Fisher, also known as Dolly, worked for the munitions side of the Goblin factory at Epsom, between 1939 and 1943 and lived at Ashtead.
I am trying to trace her whereabouts between 1936 to 1939 as this might help me discover where I was born and lived for the first three years of my life. I was evacuated from Deal in Kent in 1939 to Wales. My mother died in 1943 and was buried two weeks before her partner, my father Albert Worman.
Does anyone remember them? or me as a small child in Deal? Both my parents were catering managers at Goblin and also travelled to coastal towns in Wales possibly involved with their jobs.

I lived in Manchester and was bombed several times. There was some close bombing around us in the early part of war. The closest was a land mine. An entire family of nine were never discovered. The mines were more destructive than 500lb bombs.
I Went into the Merchant Navy at age 17 in 1942, until 1945. I was at Algiers in November 1942, then went to the Persian Gulf and India during 1943 and 1944. I was on many Atlantic voyages in 1945. There were lots of near misses and lost shipmates. I returned to the sea after army service in 1956.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
