World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

CQMS R. Elliott .     British Army 255 Car Coy. Royal Army Service Corps   from

(d. )

I have recently purchased some old books and maps. I have found a German Phrase book issued to 3127590 CQMS Elliott R , 255 Car Company RASC,Stationed at Hoechst , Nr Frankfurt , Germany 26th August 1945. I wonder if he is still alive or perhaps his relations might be interested in this book. I would willingly send it to them.

RG Elliott .     British Army Royal Armoured Corps

RG Elliott served with the Royal Armoured Corps British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project are no longer in touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Ronald E. Elliott .     Civilian

My family and I lived in the village of Hawley, near Dartford, Kent from 1936 until 1946. During the war it was known as `bomb alley' and `hell's corner', because of the number of bombs that fell on our area when the German bombers travelled back and forth from Dover. In the village we were known as the `colonials' from Canada, because we had arrived from there in 1936. When the war started we were unable to return to our country of birth, although my mother and father had left Dartford in 1914 with two children aged 2 and 5 months. Father was born in South Darenth and mother was born in Dover. There were four brothers and two sisters and we lived at No. 40 Shirehall Road. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can remember our family or anyone who wants to swop war stories.

L/Cpl. Stanley Henry Gordon Elliott .     British Army 1BDE Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry   from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire

My grandfather, Stanley Elliott, died back in the UK when I was very young, after emigrating to Australia with his family in 1951, and from stories my mother has told, he didn't like to speak about his time in the war.

From the information I have researched he was captured during the retreat at Dunkirk in 1940 and sent to Stalag XXA in Thorn (Torun) for the rest of the war.

If anyone has any photos or information about him during that time, I would be extremely grateful.

Pte. Thomas Wilson "Tucker" Elliott .     British Army 3 Commando   from Whitehaven, Cumbria

My father enlisted in the Border Regiment on 2nd March 1938 at Whitehaven, Cumbria, aged 17 years, having lied about his date of birth. He saw action in Dunkirk, Norway, Dieppe and other locations marked 'special services' on his army records. He was captured at Dieppe and incarcerated in Stalag V111-B, suffering from bullet and shrapnel wounds. In 1945 he was forced onto one of the notorious death marches from which he made his escape and was eventually picked up by American forces in Czechoslovakia. Like so many others, he never spoke about his wartime experiences although there are one or two that we have picked up from others along the way. At Dieppe he was part of the 'Yellow Beach' offensive, alighting at Dieppe and scaling the cliff at Bernaval. As Dad and his comrades scaled the sheer cliff face, German gunners were in position and waiting. This is when Dad suffered his injuries and he was captured in a corn field at the top of the cliffs. Whilst in Stalag V111-B he managed to steal a baked potato and when challenged by a guard promptly hid the contraband in his clothing, the guard pinned him up against a wall severely burning his chest. He treated his own infected wounds with maggots and on repatriation to the UK he was severely malnourished. I am forever in his debt and very proud to say he was my Dad.

Sgt. Thomas Douglas Elliott .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 302 Ferry Training Unit   from Millerston, S'clyde.

(d.3rd June 1944)

Sergeant (Flight Engineer) Thomas Elliott was the son of Anthony and Margaret Elliott; husband of Mary Ellen Elliott, of Millerston, S'clyde. He was 25 when he died and is buried in the Protestant Section of the Malabo Cemetery, Bioko, Equatorial Guinea.

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
